Meridian flip on GEM

Am I right in thinking that the reason for meridian flips on GEMs is to avoid the risk of the back of the telescope hitting a mount leg at high angles? And if so, would there be a problem if I disabled flipping on a GoTo mount when imaging across the meridian with a telescope and camera that is too short to hit the legs?

You can disable the flip as long as you are not worried about weight movement or telescope hitting something when imaging before->past meridian.

I really can't see a GEM going full circle without something getting hit somewhere. Most premium mounts will not spin full circle as they have hard-stops.
