new Neigbour moved in next door and I now have a security light iluminating my Observator and garden ............. there are out and it is on.

Is high up the side of the house and lights up the front of our house, our drive also.......

It appeared tonigt, I went out to start the scope cooling for some Jupiter imaging in a few hours, No one is in they have gone out and have left that on and one on the other side of the property also.

I just closed the obsy and went back in I hve no chance of anything with this, to go from a really great site to it been wrecked im gutted.

I might be in luck and its on a timer, so ill wait and see what happens.

It does however also light up my sons bedroom as its directly opposite his window.....

Speak to them.

Explain that it's going to affect your hobby. Offer them a look through your scope as well. More importantly I would also mention that it shines into your boys room. Be polite and courteous, maybe use the excuse of welcoming them next door and slip it into conversation.

To me if they could lower it, it would still give them what they want and also not directly affect you? Looking at the photo if it's lower it might be shielded with a hedge?

I know how frustrating it must be to suddenly be confronted with this, especially if they have gone out and it's left on.

Sorry to see this Earl, I agree with Digz though.

The only real way forward is to have a nice friendly chat about it, even though you are fuming now when you get a chance have a word.

You know the drill, sons bedroom, in our eyes, tell them about the obsy and they may even think you are a professional. Of course with the obligatory do you want to come and have a look through one of the scopes.

Calm and friendly diplomacy to start with, most people are relatively understanding.

I frequently read posts and threads like this, both here, and on US forums.

What I don't understand is why it seems that these days close proximity neighbours don't at least acknowledge each other.

When I bought my first house as a 21yr old, my first ports of calls were to my new neighbours in order to introduce myself and open the door to getting to know them a little.

Turned out that my nearest neighbour was a Police officer, rather than a criminal, hence the number of cop cars that frequented our bit.

We became half decent friends, BBQ on occasion and who knows how many pints.

I'd highly recommend a discussion and an invite to your neighbour over to the Obsy' in order to 'open friendship' and 'show the problem'.

Maybe lay it on a 'bit thick' with your stroke issues, if you feel the need.

Please guys I know some things are in jest, but a public forum is not like a laugh with your mates in the pub, solutions causing criminal damage, however gratifying it may be are still Criminal.

Dealling with this effectivly and within the Law is paramount.

You have my sympathy Earl as I have suffered for years with a similar situation. In my case the the neighbor is totally unapproachable after issues with his barking dog. 

Best to approach them immediately, in daylight,  and I would suggest with a bottle of wine and a welcome card as your new neighbors. Most people are understanding and they probably have no idea of the issue.

A burgler's biggest nightmare is breaking into a house - and being confronted by an armed resident. This is why the vast majority of housebreaks occur during regular business-hours. 9 to 5 is when most burglers are working. Just like regular people.

Statistics bear this out. Perhaps you can tell this to your neighbor? Maybe he'd only turn on the "insecurity-light" during daylight hours.

Well said. Needless to say topics like this do get the attention of mods and whilst some posts may be in jest, they are against our CoC (which you all agreed to when signing up).

I'm sure Earl is (quite rightly) venting here and wants members to suggest solutions that don't break the CoC or suggest illegal activity, and sympathise.

As others have said light trespass is an issue but I'd be tempted not use that as the opening gambit as it could have the opposite effect. Hopefully your neighbour will be reasonable.

Hi Earl, sorry to hear about your problem. Most people are understanding especially if you mention it is lighting your son's bedroom.

It's the season of good will, invite them over for a mince pie and a tipple and bring it up then. If they aren't cooperative then it's time to make way complaint to the council. Plenty of photographic evidence that it is encroaching on your privacy. Hopefully it won't come to that though...

Sorry to hear abour this issue Earl.

I would be mortified if I thought something I'd installed was adversely affecting my neighbours and even more so if the peace of mind of a young child was involved. I'm sure anyone in their right mind would take some action to reduce / remove the affects once they are aware of the impact of their light.

Being realistic I guess the impact on your sons bedroom will be the most powerful "lever" to pull.

I hope you achieve a positive outcome soon.

Yes, have a word with them and show them that their actions are intruding. If they get narky, then remind them that light pollution is, by law, considered the same as noise or smells.

If they get really narky, then there's only one other option. Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Not anymore it isn't, the right to dark or light is no longer the same.....

Seems to be a burgeoning trend nowadays to light up houses all over. Inexpensive LED & other similar low voltage lighting is a big factor.

We might be cutting down on LP with advanced streetlighting, but if more and more people do this it will counteract that.
