Sun in WL & CaK - 19/12/14

Hi,

On an impulse and seeing one on ABS, I bought a Baader CaK filter.  Now I know that at 6nm it isn't going to be in a PST league, never mind a Lunt, but a quick test this afternoon from my office, through a double glazed window and haze I think it is a result.

All pics WO ZS80, Lunt wedge, 0.5x FR, ASI120MM-S

I can certainly see more surface detail in this image, even though it has more noise, coming from the longer exposure and higher gain on the camera.  For some reason, it looks more blue on my screen, but when uploaded and viewed in a browser, it looks more red.

I am going to declare this low cost Baader K line filter a success, can't wait for a clear bright day to give it a proper try as that now moves my white light rig to give WL, Ha (Quark) and now CaK.

lol, at least a Lunt stands a chance at fitting down the chimney. I think a C11 might stretch Mr Claus a bit. Gotta ask though. :D

Promising start Robin, I have often wondered if there is much point in one of these filters for my newt with solar film.

Thanks guys.  Sorry to all those who missed the filter.

Jake, I was going to go outside, but the wind was quite strong and just as I was putting my coat on, it started raining.  That was the reason for imaging inside.

Very interesting, Robin, CaK is very tempting. I was thinking about CaK filters as there was a mention of a new filter on solarchat - $299 but talk of 2Angstrom?:

I don't think Santa is bringing me any type of CaK filter. I think we might add a Quark in the new year (so we have his and hers), the astro fund has received a boost from the sale of our SM60 double stacking filter.

Very interesting. Almost looks too good to be true. I am guessing someone on Solar chat is trying one and then we will know. I had a look at his other filters, some interesting things there for the DIY astronomer.

Yes, the results from this new filter look excellent! and talk of a CaH too, I might think about getting it if it is as good as the CaK version. A CaK filter needs to be around 2A in width to work well. A PST CaK is 2.2A, a Lunt is 2.4A, a Baader K-line is 80A!
