Vintage Towa 339 Restoration

Recommended Posts

Lovely scope Rod. I have one of these and they really excel on doubles, the Moon etc. Towa certainly knew how to make a good lens..

Dave

Thanks Dave.

I am relatively inexperienced with observing doubles, but this scope has inspired me to do more of it.  It is performing very well indeed.

The Towa's are relatively common here as they supplied Sears for many years, and I bet sold a whole lot of scopes.  It is remarkable that they continued to produce such nice optics in mass marketed scopes.

Thanks for the interest.

Very nice, funny thing i had one of these and it sort of failed to really live up to the reputation

Sorry you got one that did not work out.  Maybe you need to try another? :^)   (Just in case you needed an excuse to by another scope)

What a great project - I love your choice of colour for the wooden legs.

Thanks, I think the color is perfect too.

I will say that the wood in this project was a very pleasant surprise.  A good deal of the time when you see wood finished with a dark "PaintStain" it is usually because they are trying to cover an inexpensive and unattractive wood.  But in this case it could be considered a crime, because the wood underneath turned out to be quite beautiful when finished properly.

Thanks

Rod

I have just bought a Topic 80mm which I believe is a similar spec telescope.I am going to restore it .I have just had a nice brass .96 to 1 1/4 inch adaptor made for it.I also intend using it on my Vixen type mount so will be looking for a set of tube rings.I will of course set it up on it's original mount and tripod just as I did when I had one in the early 1980's.

All the best,

martin.

I believe the Topic may be the same scope made by Towa.  Check for the "Circle T" mark of Towa on the name tag.

You are in for a treat if yours is anything like mine.

Best of luck with the new scope and clear skies.
