Help.... My Scope is starting to get corrosion

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys. I have a Skywatcher 200p which I've always kept in the conservatory where the ambient temperature is close to the out side temperature so cool down time is virtually nil. Unfortunately I don't get to use the scope as much as I would like to and although being stored in the conservatory and covered with a blanket it seems to have suffered from the cold/damp air. The white metal ring at the mirror end of the scope has a few bubbles of corrosion under the paint and the first 1"-1.5" of the tube has some patches where the paint has lifted. I believe the ring at the mirror end I can take off and dismantle so it can be rubbed down and resprayed, also I will have a chance to clean the primary mirror whilst its in my hands. Do any of you guys know if the paint for the tube is available as it's a metallic black ? Also my question is should a scope be stored like this in a conservatory ? I know they are for outdoor use and you do/can get dew on them and also rain if you are viewing on a night where you are dodging clouds to get a shot of something.

Hmm, unusual usually dew or condensation forms on the coldest part of the room. Trapped moisture could be an issue under the blanket? Maybe keep it near a radiator or other heat source so the damp settles elsewhere?

Cleaning the corrosion and applying a barrier paint would help prevent further corrosion.

No Problem David. :) Now doing a carbon fibre wrap has got me thinking. :)

There's two reasons I wouldn't do the carbon wrap .

1) it's like putting a ferrari badge on a punto. The only thing that should look like carbon fibre is carbon fibre IMHO

2) You're asking for trouble with moisture/damp getting underneath it where you can't see it or wipe it off.

I must stress that issue 1 is my personal opnion only but 2 is a real problem :) good luck with whatever you decide
