Observing around Peterborough

Recommended Posts

Paxton Pits is a good location but a fair drive from Peterborough - half the problem being getting out of Peterborough these days. The A605 to get out and South is being dug up.

The A19 to Eye and Thorney looks an option.

The A16 off the A19 also looks possible.

Not sure what is up towards Market Deeping.

Also there is Yaxley but likely a bit too much LP, however I see there is Holm Fen Nature Reserve. Reserves seem a fair option as they have roads into them and often parking and in the middle of nowhere.

There is Peterborough AS

They meet at Bretton, the Copeland Centre, Bretton PE3 6YJ

Hi annsmillie89 !

I live out at Crowland and it's not too bad here. I get set up in my back garden then turn the outside lights off. Late at night / early morning it's pretty dark.

I plan on joining the Peterborough AS in the new year.

Hi annsmillie89

I'm in Huntingdon and have been seeking somewhere to do my observing locally, so far it looks like the ripptons for me, not too far from you down the A1?  As hobsey suggested the Fens are a good place to start.

I have started a website to try and list areas for observing, check it out and if you find somewhere please share with others.

I live in Whittlesey, its ok there. Prior to that I lived in Coates.

There is a fishing lake in Coates that I've observed meteors from - thats pretty dark s long as you don't look West towards Peterborough.

Failing that, somewhere between Pondersbridge and Ramsey is dark - saw the Milky way through Orion for the first time driving through there :) Actually stopped the car to get out and have a look!!!
