After getting loads of advive from all on SGL and reading all the reviews i can im going to get a couple of these.

just got first scope, meade lx90 acf 8inch goto.

Think i will get 5mm 8mm and 12mm.

i realise there wont be many chances to use 5mm, but its the curiosity.

does this seem s good way to go.

I've had a couple of 8" SCT's and I'm fairly sure you will be wasting you're money if you buy the 5mm. 400x mag will be too much for the seeing conditions mainly, it would need to be an exceptional night to work at all well.

The 8mm will give you very high power planetary views at 250x, then you want one close to 20mm to give you a 2mm exit pupil for galaxies so 18mm will be the closest in the BST range. I would say these are the main two you should get.

As for the third eyepiece, the 12mm might be good on globs or planetary when the seeing isn't good and the 25mm will be a good finder eyepiece plus open clusters.

So if it was me I'd go either 8, 12, 18 or 8, 18, 25

I have a c8 and got the 8,12,15,18 and 25. All very good eyepieces but the 8 very rarely gets used as the conditions need to be perfect.

The 12mm on the other hand is superb and my most used on planets.

As said, don't bother with the 5mm.

Hobsey may have a point about the 12mm being more of a work horse planetary eyepiece in the 8" SCT. I was kind of rounding down because they don't do a 9-10mm BST.

I know this threads about BST's, but if it was me, and I had a budget of 50 pounds per eyepiece, I would be tempted to go for a 10mm BCO - Baader Classic Ortho as my planetary eyepiece. Then go 18mm BST and 25mm BST.

I had the 6mm and 10mm BCO's when using my old ED120, Jupiter was very memorable with these EP's. The only reason I wouldn't recommend one is if you wear glasses for astigmatism as the eyerelief isn't good enough for wearing glasses.

Nothing against BST's mind I've owned the full set in the past and they are very comfy and quite flat, just not as razor sharp and scatter free as the BCO's for those high power planetary views   :)

Thanks again for all the help, its good to hear advice from those who have knowledge on this and from those who have or had similar size scopes or have used the ep i mentioned.

i thought i had made up my mind, back to reading a few more reviews.

again all help is welcome.

Hi alr, you won't use anything below the 12mm in that scope, don't waste your money on higher mags.  Get the 12mm, 18mm and the 25mm is my recommendation.

I had a full set of BST Starguiders and only sold a couple when I bought Maxvisions.  They are excellent eyepieces.  The lower power eyepieces are likely to get the most use so I would go along with the advice above and get the 12/18/25.
