GIMP-ing the Great Orion Nebula etc.

Recommended Posts

As a Video Atronomer (by choice) and cheap skate (unfortunately!)

I find myself having to "translate" Photoshop image methods to GIMP.

With the Great Orion Nebula currently in view I was looking for a

way of extending the contrast of my humble offerings. Then I came

across this script - Generic "Contrast Blending" and all that? ;)

http://tir.astro.utoledo.edu/jdsmith/code/exposure_blend.php

I have only run it with "simulated data" but it works / looks useful? :)

Hmm so would you run this with images that have been stretched differently or use ones that have been exposed differently?

Does it work in 16 bit?

No tests yet. I have a feeling that it would require different *exposures*.

Which I sense also requires a bit of thought or experiment? :)

My initial fiddlings were with the same image, differently stretched etc. ;)

I EVER hear rumours that GIMP in "eight bit"? On the other hand, so are

my Video Astronomy images. Which also make things slightly trickier... :o
