I've just noticed this highly recommended lens is coming up this afternoon at 4pm as an Amazon Black Friday deal so I thought I'd give a heads up. Normal price is £308 but they were selling it on Tuesday in a deal for £219 so I expect it will be the same again.

I've no experience of that site, but something about it sets my Spidey senses tingling. No address is listed. no telephone number.

A Google search points out that they are based in Hong Kong even though they use a .co.uk domain address.  Would you get asked for Customs and import tax on receipt?

I am probably wrong and they are probably fine, but there's something about that site that makes me cautious.

Well spotted. Off the list they go

The distortion on this Samyang 14mm is easily corrected. I added a link to the ACR profile you need for Canon bodies when I did some basic testing of the lens. I would note that I rejected the first lens I bought because of an off-axis focusing problem, the left hand side of the image was sharp but the right hand side was soft. http://www.photosbykev.com/wordpress/2014/08/12/samyang-14mm-f2-8-ed-umc-lens-testing/

I don't really have a problem with this site. The contact details on the site make clear it is in Hong Kong so they aren't hiding anything. I just bought a camera from there so I will tell you how it goes. They do include taxes in the delivery though. Something that winds me up on eBay when the delivery price is inflated by spurious sized import taxes .

I hope that it works out for   you. There's no indication of a Hong Kong address on the Contact page or on their About Us page...you have to go into the T+Cs to find it at the bottom.

They have recently changed their T+Cs to read:

"

16.1 To simplify the process of buying internationally, eglobal central choose to handle the process of custom clearance for customers. By purchasing products through eglobal central, you authorise eglobal central to make arrangements for clearance of customs on your behalf for the products in your order. As importing products from overseas can be a hassle for most of our customers, we organise this process for you. We then provide you with fast local shipping to deliver the goods to your door. As a result, prices shown on this website are the final total you have to pay to have the order delivered to your door, without any hidden charges and customs delay."

Until recently they read:

"16.2 When ordering goods from eglobalcentral.co.uk, import duties and tax are applicable on overseas deliveries, which are levied once the package of purchased goods reached specified destination. The import duties and taxes levied on the invoiced order, as well as courier’s custom handling fee and any indirectly related tax and duties arise from custom policies are responsibility of the buyer/recipient, eglobalcentral.co.uk has no control over these import duties or taxes. Any additional charges for custom clearance must be borne by you."

Having bought from Honk Kong before, you might be OK. I know that HMRC have cracked down on importing recently and virtually everything coming from the States is now caught with import taxes and custom charges. Stuff from the Far East seems to get through OK, but beware that you are buying a "grey" import. You may find that the manufacturer refuses to honour any warranty. Sigma UK certainly wouldn't honour a warranty on one of their lenses that I bought in Singapore when I enquired with them.

Hi Zak, thanks for pointing that out. I was quite careful for once in reading the Ts & Cs which is where I found that section as you describe.

I agree that this will likely be considered a grey import but the reliability rate of consumer electronics is normally good enough. If the price is right there's a balance point to the risk.. and immediate problems can be sent back for rectifications.

  • 3 weeks later...

final word on eglobal - they tracked, updated and delivered as promised with no import tax issues - it arrived as a European carrier parcel  - so maybe it was sent from Rotterdam

The item is a grey import of a Japanese model but I haven't really got an issue there. They also provided the two-to-three pin power adapter required for the battery charger. Once I reset the menu language to English I shall have a play. It looks and feels great otherwise.
