EQ5 movement when clutches are tightened

Hi,

I'm relatively new, and have been using an EQ5 pretty successfully for a couple of months. However, when the RA and Dec clutches are tightened, there is still a small amount of play in both axes. The clutches really do lock things very solidly - apart from the small amount play. With my small amount of experience, I would have thought that this would cause problems either when the scope is balanced in either axis, or when doing a 3 star alignment which requires the scope to go past its balance point. I have read what I can about this, and deliberately keep everything slightly unbalanced, so as to keep tension on the drivetrain. However, there is still the play when moving over from one side to the other.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

Regards

Richard

Hello Richard. This issue suggests that the drive system needs adjusting to reduce backlash between the worm and wormwheel. It's also worth checking whether the dovetail puck has worked loose, there are usually three grubscrews holding it in place.

My HEQ5 makes a strange intermittent noise if I get rid of all the play - it runs much more happily with just the smallest amount of play - I couldn't measure it but I can just feel it.

To get rid of backlash issues I always make sure the rising side is slightly heavy so there's no oscillation in the backlash zone.

Works for me......
