200mm Takumar First Light - The Pleiades

Recommended Posts

Here's my first effort with my (40 year old) 200mm SMC Takumar f4 lens, taken on Sunday night.

Really pleased with it, quite a bit of faint nebulosity is showing up. It's about an hours worth of data, mostly 2 minute or so subs, with the lens stopped down to f5.6. This is a work in progress, I can't get Photoshop to install on my laptop for some reason so I just stretched it in DSS and tweaked it a bit with the Canon software.

Nice result and shows a lot of promise - You might want to consider using front aperture masks rather than stopping down using the lenses built in Iris  fro diffraction spike less images - They are dead easy to make using a cutting compass just remember to cut the OD first...

Thanks for the comments. I think I've picked up some of the extended nebulosity but I need to check it against a deeper image to be sure - either that or the lens needs a clean. ;)  If I can get 2 minute subs with this lens on my EQ3-2 consistently it puts plenty more target within reach.

Yes, that might be worth thinking about. In some shots I like the spikes as they can make the primary stars of a constellation stand out, but I don't want them obliterating detail in the nebulosity.

The corner stars look really even with the rest of the image :-)

It's super flat at f5.6. :) It's usable about f4.5 but the star shapes do seem to suffer a bit - I had a quick try at Andromeda.
