Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am buying a old Meade 2120 from a friend,it is mint eexcept for the secondary mirror is tarnished. The primary mirror is mint. Can someone give me directions to properly remove the secondary so I can have it recoated? Does the secondary have timing marks like the corrector lens? Thanks in advance

Welcome to SGL Subidude. Hope you enjoy it here.

Ask all the questions you need to.

Have a read of the Manual, it should give you all the Info. you need.

The secondary mirror is not affected, and needs no special placement. The corrector plate does though, so make sure you

mark it's position exactly before you remove it, and refit it exactly in the same place.

I've had mine apart, pretty straight forward, just make sure you don't rotate anything, generally has alignment marks already but not always.

Doubt the Meade manual will be much help, I don't think they expect the user to take it apart.

You can find proper disassembly / reassembly instructions on the Meade LX200 GPS  Yahoo group.

As well as ensuring that the corrector plate goes back in EXACTLY the same position it came out of (worth marking the rim and plate with bits of tape) be aware that sometimes there will be some packing in the rim (cardboard , folded bits of paper, cork) and these too will need to go back in the same place.

The easiest way to  remove the corrector plate is to lock the sct at about 45 degrees and loosen the bolts on the rim. Mark both rim and plate so that you can align later. Ensure nothing falls in on the primary else you will be looking for a new one  ....(whilst the plate is off worth checking to see if it needs a gentle bath)

Good luck.

Oh dear, If only I had read my Meade Manual, I would never have suggested you read it.

I wonder why they bother to produce one

Especially as they leave out lot's of useful stuff, won't bore you with a list

Why,is it a long one?

I know there's a website primarily covering Meade LX scopes. Eagle Creek or something like that.

Yes, even basic stuff like how to sync on a star isn't mentioned, they do devote several pages to try to flog you "accessories"
