3 from a first session with camera on HEQ5

Recommended Posts

3 from the last clear night.  stock canon 5Dk2 with 200mm @f4.  all single frames on HEQ5, probably 3 minute exposures processed in Lightroom.  M32 and M45 cropped, third is Deneb (with the beginnings of some condensation)

I have a processing question from you experts.  I take a few of each target and have tried playing with DSS (I have a Mac, so it isn't easy).  I produces what appears to be a B&W image.  I can stretch it out into a reasonable image in PS but it is still B&W.  I have tried manually stacking them in PS and creating a smart object and stacking them in median mode ( having subtracted Darks) but the single frame in Lightroom is usually better.  Does anyone know of a good website that has an idiot proof catch to congratulate guide that i can look at?

I like the potential in the images. A bit more experience on the processing and they'll look great.  Loads of people on here can help with the processing.  I watched all Doug German's videos on Youtube to get me going.  Just search for his channel. Regarding DSS I run it on my daughters PC before exporting the Tiff file (it appears to be monochrome) to my Mac.  In Photoshop I then I do Image>Mode>16 bit and use the Exposure and Gamma option.  You can then use the various tools in PS to pull out the colour.

after following a bit of Doug German (i had watched a bit before, but it turns out - if you do and fail, then you understand a bit more in the lesson...) this is a stack of 7 images plus darks but no flats or bias, cropped a bit to take out the worst of the vignette

Many thanks for the info, I have a D3100 and adapter to use my 150 refractor, but the camera didn't come with any lenses.

Your 200mm seems to produce something I'm looking for.

Chris

I really like using lenses.  they have a wider aperture than an affordable scope, easier, or more forgiving, on the tracking, and I just love the wide field.  For sure these wonderful images of "closeup" DSOs are spectacular, but the wide field seems to help put the viewer in his place...   ;-)

wrt to lenses, its a tricky thing.  I bought mine to do ordinary photography and spent every penny i could afford (and mostly did it when the $ was through the floor).  With astro it seems even more crucial to have nice glass

The subs look very promising, the 200mm L is a fine lens. I also enjoy widefield imaging, everything is more forgiving at relatively short focal lengths and it helps put objects in context. There are plenty of targets big enough to show up well at 200mm, I've been using this all-sky Milky Way panorama to help pull them out. A modded camera would really help with the nebulae.

Bright point sources in the corner are the most punishing test for any lens and not something they are typically designed to deal with well. However, there are some very affordable lenses that perform well for AP. I like my vintage Takumars and my 50mm f1.8.
