Battery power!

Recommended Posts

Morning SGL people,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice regarding connecting my CCD to a leisure battery? I'm currently powering the CCD through the mains but that's connected to a long cable that leads from my garden into my shed...I don't like the thought of dew/frost getting into the plug and shorting it out, possibly damaging the camera. Everything else is powered through my battery (mount, dew heaters, autofocuser) and I'm pretty sure I can power the USB hub through the USB port so I can unplug that too.

I'd like to be totally 'stand alone' with regards to power and was interested in how other people connect their CCD's to power them?

I'm using a QSI583wsg if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

Phil.

There are many ways to skin a cat - this is the way I do it - not saying its right or wrong - but it works.....

Waterproof box with several sockets - all wired to a common fused input from a 12v leisure battery.

Then waterproof plugs on everything I need to plug in.

I use XLR plugs and sockets. You can see the distribution box on the left here. Then you just need a lead with a suitable plug on the end to match your camera.

This gives me the flexibility to plug in the mount, dew heaters, cameras, etc at will.

Don't suppose it's possible to bury a permanent power cable and place a receptacle inside the shed, out of the elements? If you are going to run a battery QSI recommends that you still use the power brick, so you would be looking at an inverter also. I haven't tried to run my 683 straight off a battery so I don't know if they are being cautious.

I'm hoping to move house soon Charles, currently up for sale, so I don't really want to be burying cables. When I move to the next house I'll be doing just that and will hopefully be building myself an obsy but for now I just need something portable that I can set up once a month when it's clear ;)
