Confused about Barlow Lens

Recommended Posts

Am I right in saying any Barlow lens should have a plastic lens (cheap ones) or multi coated glass lens inside the tube? I had a rubbish 3x Barlow and that had a plastic lens, I ordered an Orion Shorty 2x Barlow lens and it's just a hollow tube that you can drop something through no lens of any kind.

Any advice appreciated, may sound silly but if you don't ask you don't know. :)

your orion shorty should have a black bottom at the base that screws into the silver barrel. if not  you simply have a tube . probably an honest error. look at an image online of an orion shorty (not shorty plus)  and youll see.

The lens should not really screw into the bottom of the tube, they are normally at a fixed location, otherwise the "barlow" effect is undefined.

Suspect that you have a return from someone that the original took the lens out of, or - more likely - you have an extension tube that has managed to get mixed up. In which case some one will get a barlow and not an extension tube.

the barlow I have is a X2 and it had a screw off black surround lens at the bottom you can take it off leving a hollow tube and put onto the eyepiece and make it into a X1.5 barlow! so it sounds like it the same type as I have without the barlow lens fitted!
