If its just for star trial images or short exposure astrophotography, you dont necessarily need a good sturdy tripod.

I started out with a cheap Hama Star 61: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-00004161-Star-61-Tripod/dp/B0000WXD0W/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1416751366&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=hama+camera+tripod

Is only £17 and did the job it is supposed to. You can always weight tripods down as well if you do run into problems.

Then i bought an Astrotrac so upgraded to a carbon fibre Manfrotto: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manfrotto-055CXPRO4-Lightweight-discontinued-manufacturer/dp/B001GIPR62/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416751259&sr=8-2&keywords=manfrotto+tripod+carbon+fibre

It is solid but cost over £200. I can definitely see and feel the difference from the opposite ends of the market. It comes down to how much you are willing to spend really. Like i said, if you just plan on just shooting star trails then i wouldnt fork out more than you have to! The Manfrotto will last a lifetime but the Hama did start to deteriorate after a while, you could look at it as a disposable tripod that you would have to replace every year or two depending how well you looked after it.

If it is for camera + lens only without the telescope, then you already have one in your signature. For convenience, simply obtain a short spare dovetail and a Ball and Socket Tripod head.

Attach B/S head to dovetail and you will always be good to go. B/S heads can be had very cheaply.

Check out the widefield imaging section of the forum.
