Hi all

Had a really good annual trip to Iceland this year for Aurora and managed to get some good imaging done.

All taken on the Canon 1100D @f3.6 ISO400. Taken over the 15th and 16th of November 2014. Sadly the battery went about 2am on the first night and in changing it, it looks like I've knocked out the focus a bit so some aren't as tight as they could be.

Chosen a few of the best in this album.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers

Will

Thanks Gav, I usually try and get up there once a year (or similar like Levi in Finland) and have been sacrificing summer holidays to do so but Saturday night was by far the best night of Aurora i've ever seen. Its quite fantastic to see the sky covered from horizon to horizon too.

Its suddenly stuck me that given your photographic expertise you must be looking at my photos with a very critical eye! I reckon you'd be able to produce significantly better results than me too!

Cheers

Thats simply stunning, I suspect he was using significantly better glass and equipment that I have access to!

This years Astrophotographer of the Year winner is pretty good too: http://www.rmg.co.uk/whats-on/exhibitions/astronomy-photographer-of-the-year/2014-winners

I'd like to invest in some much better glass (f2.8 or even f1.4) to get more light in over a shorter exposure but I still struggle with focusing in low light. Not only do I find it really difficult (the canon lenses I have focus just past infinity annoyingly) but it also shifts throughout (although given the deep sky stuff this shouldn't really be a surprise!).

Plus theres the infernal 'need more money' thing ;)

The APOTY winning pic is excellent. What I really like about it is the irony that the chosen best astronomy picture from everything entered was taken at 33mm with not ridiculously expensive equipment... So, perhaps your 'infernal need more money' thing is totally unfounded.

Of course I don't believe that one iota, astrophotography seems to be on a par with owning a Ferrari when it comes to an ever increasing required spend rate!! The more you do the more you want to do and the more and better equipment is required to do it. #lovingthejourney!

Yes you make a very good point - i've heard this one (or the much more expensive Canon equivalent) is the go to lens for night imaging: http://www.amazon.com/Rokinon-Aspherical-Angle-Canon-RK24M-C/dp/B006YM9L26

Also agree with the money spend. I dread to count how much money has gone out of the bank account in the last 25 years, the rate simply only accelerated when I started to take pictures too!
