NEW Clear Outside Weather Forecast App

FLO

Recommended Posts

Back in June we released the Clear Outside weather forecast site for astronomers wanting to plan their observing sessions.

Today we are releasing a Clear Outside App for IOS (iPhone)

Clear Outside is built entirely in-house and is available free of charge, it is our thank-you to you the astronomy community for your support over the years.

Features include

  • Seven-day hourly forecasts, updated hourly.
  • Low, medium and high cloud cover.
  • Detailed Sun and Moon rise, set and meridian data.
  • Civil, nautical and astronomical darkness.
  • Space Station (ISS) pass over times.
  • All data, including ISS times, is accurately modelled on your precise longitude/latitude.
For accuracy we use an aggregate of a number of weather models including the UK Met Office, the Norwegian Met Office and the American NOAA. Forecasts are also updated hourly because the clear sky between showers often provides the best seeing conditions and 30-min sessions under a dark sky with a grab-&-go telescope are golden.
For reliability and long-term stability we have invested in commercial weather data services and a dedicated infrastructure.
We have had fun building Clear Outside and hope you find it useful. We are also keen to develop it further so if you have any thoughts or suggestions please let us know. And if you find a bug we'll happily squash it!
Thank-you,
Steve and the FLO team.

Clear Outside is an in-house project but I'd like to say a special thank-you to our beta-testers and to Grant (FLO's IT Manager) for his enthusiasm and technical wizardry.

We have all played a part in the website and app's development but I think it fair to say without Grant there would be no Clear Outside  :icon_salut:

Just downloaded to my iPad.

Many thanks for all your hard work.

We will be interested to hear your thoughts because the Clear Outside IOS App is optimised for iPhone, not iPad, but I have installed it on my wife's iPad and my iPad Mini and it looks great.

If you follow the link in my first post you can download the app to iPad but Clear Outside is not currently listed in the iPad store so will not show in a search there.

Steve

Nice to have it in app format -- the mobile site worked ok but much better in the app.

Is there a way for me to set the 'home' screen to be my home location?  I've saved my home in 'locations' and can use the 'current location' tab, but it would be nicer for it to load my home report on app startup rather than always showing 50.70,-3.52 ;-)

Alternatively... When in the iPad Store search for 'Clear Outside' then on the results page change 'iPad only' to 'iPhone only'. Clear Outside will then show in the search results

Hi Simon,

When you add the location, there is a little switch to make that your 'Home' Location.

You can change it at any time, by going into the Location tab and choose the edit option.

Hope that helps,

Grant

Aha!  That button was hidden by the keyboard when I was typing in the name of the location :-).  Many thanks!

@ Steve, it really does look good on the iPad mini. It works well for me. Looking forward to the android version for my phone.

For me, Apps work faster and are easier to find & organise :). Also, the location finder is much easier to do when you've about. Sure there are lots of other reasons, but these are mine.

Dave is right. We feel it is important to offer both a website and app but for many the app will be their preferred choice being quicker and more convenient.

Thanks, FLO, for the ongoing development of a wonderful idea.

I have installed the new app on my phone and iPad but I can't 'size' it to fit the iPad as the original does. Is that possible? Am I missing something?

And last question: will you continue to support the original Clear Outside'?

Either way, thanks again.

The Clear Outside app has been optimised for iPhone, not iPad, so it is not listed in the iPad store but if you use this link when on your iPad or select 'iPhone only' when searching the iPad store you will find Clear Outside and be able to install it on an iPad.

It actually works rather well on iPad (which surprised and pleased us) but when we update the app we will make a version properly optimised for iPad

We will continue to support the Clear Outside website - promise.

Steve

11da5f38db10bf857ea040ee638061a6.jpgjust a thought flo. As you can see in my picture, when I put it in landscape mode the day/sun/moon bar at the top and the bottom bar including home etc seem to take up a lot of space. Maybe when you turn the phone over to landscape, could these bars not slide away and come back when in portrait? (Only an idea) :)
