Hi all,

I have recently purchased a Sky-Watcher Explorer 200PDS on an EQ5 with a goto system also a canon dslr with t-ring to go with it. I am only just starting out and to be honest my brain is starting to hurt with it all but my goal is to learn the art of astro-imaging. If anyone has any tips or advise for starters it would be most appreciated! No doubt you will here more from me again in the near future as i try to get the polar alignment process round my head!

Kind regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin and welcome to SGL from another mad imager!!

There's an excellent AstroBaby site for polar alignment http://www.astro-baby.com/simplepolar/simple_polar_alignment.htm - She makes it very easy to understand, so I hope that link helps.

If you  want to learn the art of astro imaging then a good place to start is by getting hold of a copy of the book 'Making Every Photon Count' available from  the book section of the FLO website. It's something of an imagers bible and will really help you to understand what you need and why.

Those two things should keep you busy for a while :D

Look forward to seeing you around :)

You could search out clubs in your area but fedastro have changed the format of the list of clubs. They are alphabetic now, so not possible (easy) to look up clubs in Nottinghamshire. Used to be simple, pull up the list, scroll down to the county, cannot do that any more.

When polar aligning you are aligning the mount initially, not the scope.

You then do the scope alignment to get the goto accurate.

Forget the camera when you start out, just get used to setting up the mount and goto system.

Once fairly happy you can put the camera on and try some images. Note that polar alignment of the mount can be reasonable for visual, but has to be more accurate for imaging.

My suggestion is do not confuse good goto with good polar alignment.
