Help with filter for Modding Canon 1100D

Hi

I'm planning to use Gary Honis' instruction for this mod, however, I don't know whether I just remove IR-Cut filter, or replacing it with either Baader UV/IR or Astronomik MC clear filter. Could some please explain the pros and cons for each of the scenarios? My other questions are

- Any of these scenarios affects the focus?

- What DSO I can/can't take photo

- Do I need additional filter later on? If so, what do I need (at minimum for a starter)

- Is clip-on better than 1.25" or 2" filter ?

Many thanks in advance.

I think you reeally need a replacement of some sort - protection.

Check the band for any UV/IR cut filter, little use putting in an IR cut that just about matched the one you took out.

As I understand the autofocus either does not work or works badly afterwards. Works worst if no filter.

Half expect some red fringing afterwards (if using a refractor) - you are sending additional wavelengths to the sensor that the scope (or lens) was never designed to handle, so those will focus at a different plane.

I have a 1100d & i sent it to this guy  http://cheapastrophotography.vpweb.co.uk/default.html to have it modifiedit cost £85.00 at the time (last year), but you can also have a  filter fitted  for a extra £50.00  that allows you to keep the white balance & use it for normal photography the turn around time for me was a week.

Also the a/f works ok I have now also bought a cls-uhc clip in filter from astronomik if you look in  this section for my post  called M31 & heart nebula i have posted 2 shots taken with an 80mm ed & my modified 1100d

Bruno, wow very impressed, thanks for sharing. Do you mind if I ask what are those thin lines running diagonally across the photos?

Auspom, can you give me the product code of the LP clip filter you use, is this one Clip-Filter (EOS) with ASTRONOMIK CLS-CCD ??

Thanks .

Another recommendation for Cheap Astrophotography, had my 1100D modded the other day. I don't have any IR or LP filter at the moment, there are a couple images taken with it here and here. Light pollution definitely makes processing the image more difficult, I'm finding it a struggle to get the colours balanced. I don't know how much difference an IR filter would make to image quality.

What other equipment do you have besides a camera?

Hi lensman57,

I have SW-200 carbon fiber f4 tube, HEQ5 mount, a 50mm Orion guidescope, a Meade DSI-C camera, which I plan to use for autoguiding (I still try to get it setup); cable/accessories that I made myself from instruction in this forum .... so now I can control the mount from my laptop via ASCOM. I have some cheap UHC and O-III filter from Zhumell.

You have some good stuff, take your time with modding the camera and good luck. You will need a coma corrector.
