C/2014 E2 Comet Jacques and Heart & Soul Nebula

from 21st August 2014 comet Jacques as it passed between the Heart and Soul nebula, all 3 images were taken with an Astrotrac, first image is a 28mm lens, 2nd 75mm lens and 3rd 300mm lens

Nice work, I like seeing DSOs at different focal lengths, for both context and a closer view. I think that's NGC7822 at the top of the first image, despite its large size and being fairly bright it's often overlooked. I can also see the Pacman but I'm not sure what that smallish nebula to the left of it is, that would merit a closer look. There is also a big open cluster right on the edge of frame below Andromeda, I forget its name now.

By the way, how did you get Comet Jacques to stack please? I struggled with this and ended up with a streak.

Besides Andromeda, I always struggle to find stuff around Cassiopeia but looking at that shot I should be able to work out where I'm looking.

it was stacked in DSS in comet mode, stacking both stars and comet, it takes quite a while and freezes a few times but it does work, is this what you used?

Thanks, I tried comet + stars mode but couldn't get it to work for some reason, I suspect DSS doesn't like my data. Would you mind taking a quick look at this thread please, just in case you've done anything differently to me? It describes the problem I had with it and what steps I tried, without success.

hmm it should work as my subs were 3 minutes long, what setting did you have you star detection level set at?

Don't know I'm afraid, I didn't change that setting. However, the comet was showing up for selection when I went into comet mode.

I'd say try reducing the amount of stars detected when you register the files

thank you, personally I think you have to be careful when taking images of comets to not have your subs too long as the comet will move too much
