Joined after becoming fascinated by the night sky!

Hi!

I am currently studying for my GCSEs in summer 2015, one of which, luckily offered at my school, is Astronomy. Before this, I was fascinated by the stars but had never been stargazing properly and I suppose this was why I chose it as an option as one of my GCSEs.

Since studying it, I have found it so enjoyable, and now regularly make observations. I'm really pleased because I wasn't really sure about it at first, and wasn't sure if it would be my sort of thing, but it has been really good and I have found a lifelong interest.

The town I live in the UK isn't best, but during the summer, I go to stay in my family's house in Southern Spain where the night sky is amazing! It is very remote and in the mountains and clouds are very rare.

I joined because I am very keen and am even possibly looking to pursue astronomy as a career, but I don't know many other people who are as interested as I am, so I felt this was a good place to try.

Thanks,

Algieba! :-)

Welcome Algieba. You'll find most on here share your passion for astronomy, so you're in good company. Don't be afraid to ask anything, there's a wealth of knowledge and experience to be tapped.

Good luck with your studies and career.

Keep in touch

Jason

Welcome to SGL.

I would really liked to have had Astronomy as an option when I did my GCSEs. At the school I went to, even the Science was amalgamated and I didn't even have the option of taking Physics.

There are a number of member on SGL from Spain, they certainly get more clear skies than we do! But that isn't that hard :)

Good to have you onboard.

Welcome to SGL! I studied astronomy at university (obtained an MSc), and although I switched to Computer Science since, I still work with astronomers on large-scale data analysis. If you are into mathematics and physics, astronomy is a great direction for a scientific career. However, if mathematics and physics do not appeal to you, you will find it hard going at the university, as the astronomy and physics curricula show a lot of overlap (and a lot of mathematics). This is not meant to scare you away from pursuing a career in astronomy, just realistic advice.
