Upgrading Quark 1.25" barrel

Thought I would post up about this as there has been some concern about whether it is a user fix or not.

The problem for those not aware is with certain Quarks, where a bent CNC tool meant that the 1.25" barrel is over-sized and does not fit into diagonals or 2" to 1.25" adaptors. Mine was affected, and though not a problem for me as I use 2" diagonals, I wanted it to be right just in case.

Rupert at Astrograph has been excellent in keeping me up to date on what is going on so I'm quite happy with the service received there.

So, a few pictures to show how easy this was. I received a replacement barrel in the post

This is the Quark....

The barrel unscrewed very easily....

This is the Quark with barrel removed, everything sealed, the barrel is just a screw on attachment

Correct sized barrel now screwed on...

.....and Robert is your father's brother, it now fits :-)

All sorted, very easy.

Thought I would post here rather than the equipment forum as it will get more views with those into solar.

Cheers,

Stu

Thanks Jules.

It's not far off that easy. It needs to be a sensible choice of refractor, no plastic parts internally. A decent achro would do the job, recommendations between f4 and f9, optimum around f7.

For scopes below 80mm you just put the Quark into the diagonal, and put an eyepiece into the Quark and away you go. Between 80 and 120mm a UV/IR cut filter is recommended in the front of the diagonal, and above that a D-ERF is recommended. You need to avoid Petzval scopes or anything with a rear glass element nearer the point of focus.

Simple eyepiece designs are recommended, specifically TV Plossls 32 and 25mm

Seems very straightforward Stu. I wonder if the dealers will do this to their current stocks or will they leave that to the purchasors ?

BTW, when in use is the focal position around about the same as the average eyepiece ?
