Clear Blue Sky in Northants

Recommended Posts

I have just set my gear up outside (by set up I mean carried). It is a very cold frosty morning but we have a beautiful blue sky to compensate, the sun hasn't quite made it over the rooftops just yet so no news on what is going on, but it wont be too long now.

I am quite intrigued by this Jupiter sized sunspot so I plant to have another good look at it in white light, hopefully the rain and wind has cleared the atmosphere so I should get another chance to use my 2,5mm SLV.

Of course the Lunt is sat next to the Equinox so I will check out the Ha delights also, X class flare warnings are shown on the solar app

The sun has risen now and it is looking pretty good.

Great activity between position 6 O'clock & 12 O'clock (West side when looking through the scope) some huge prominences to been seen around the 7 and 11'Oclock positions. I must add this Leica Vario Zoom is nothing short of excellent for Ha across it whole range, the detail squeezed out is magnificent.

The sunspot is huge and has a huge filament to the right of it that has to be 25% of the suns diameter, We might get a toasting if a flare comes this way  especially if you believe the daily express.

Proceeding can only get better as the sun gets higher in the sky.

Pete I think Ha and white light are equally as good, white light is certainly better for sunspots etc.. but Ha is by far the better for granulation filaments, plage and proms

The clouds have rolled over here also, the forecast shows some clear spells here and there but that might be it for today :Envy:

I have Monday off work and the forecast is showing it to be green all day, it should turn out to be a double bonus as my giro mount is due on Monday also

Bit of a frustrating day (again!), patchy cloud with only small clear spells. Managed some nice views but only for a few minutes at a time.

I had the 85 and 106 out side by side. I think I actually preferred the Ha in the 85, certainly under these conditions. The contrast seemed a bit better but that may be due to my eyes not adjusting fast enough between part cloud and clear spells.

Anyway, nice views of the monster, pleased to have seen it a good few times.

Stu,

I have read somewhere that 80mm (ish) is pretty good for solar observing, I hope when I get a quark it will work well in my 80mm

The forecast is looking ok for the next couple of days here so fingers crossed we will get a sniff.
