i do believe that they all claim to be parfocal, but i always check the focus when ever i change the filters as they do need a slight tweak, i use the astronomik lrgb type 2 filters and the baader narrowband filters, 7nm for the Ha 8 nm i think for the Oiii and Sii, both nice sets baader being the cheapest, then astronomik and then the astrodon sets, if you choose lower nm filters in the narrowband Ha then the price jumps alot

Baader are considered to be the best and are certainly the most popular. The Astrodon LRGB are not as popular as their narrowband filters for some reason (Astrodon narrowband are exceptional but expensive).

You are going to need the 36mm filters for the QHY9m so I think  the Baaders are the most economical. The filters are parfocal with each other but a lot depends on how well corrected your scope is.

I was recommended Baader filters because they are parfocal (or near enough), and have used nothing else.  Astrodon are also good but rather expensive.  Actually they are all expensive.

any halo with baader

While I love the Astrodon NB filters, I use Baader for my RGB - I'm not about to change them, they work fine! So ............ I'd say that unless you want to spend more ££'s the Baader ones will be more than sufficient :)

No halo issues with Baader LRGB. I do find them parfocal as well but I'm using very highly corrected optics.

The Ha is good, too, but we do see haloes from the Baader 0111 sometimes.

I actually preferred the Baader RGB set to the Astrodon, which boasts a 'teal' blue which I found a bit insistent. Maybe it was just unfamiliarty because I've only processed a couple of images through the ADs.This is a minority view since many imagers with plenty to spend say they prefer the Astrodons.

The Baaders are popular for a reason, though. They're good.

i don`t find any halos with either the Baader or Astonomik versions, the Astronomik filters used to have problems with halos using some setups but there customer relations are very good and they guarantee there new versions halo free, i say new they have been out for a long while now, you won`t find an older set on the market anymore.

Indeed, your filters maybe parfocal, but your scope might not :)

I cannot recall ever seeing any halo issues with Baader LRGB filters.

I use Baader LRGB filters and I need to refocus when changing filters. This makes sense as not all telescopes bring the different wavelengths of light to focus at the same point. So depending on your scope, you will or won't need to refocus on a filter change.

Other than that, they have performed well.

Lots of very experienced imagers on here stating that they haven't seen halo issues with Baader LRGB filters, but I am afraid to say that I have experienced problems as discussed earlier in the year on here.  I was using 2" mounted Baaders.

Now it may be that there is a problem with my batch of Baaders, but I got a set of Astrodon filters in the summer and I find the performance of the RBG astrodons to be brilliant.  They certainly are not cheap, but the difference is there for me.

Here's a version of M45 with Baader filters:

And here's a version with the Astrodons from last night:

Not much data in the version from last night (actually 7 x 180s and 2 x 300s stacked together in each channel) - I was specifically shooting M45 to do this comparison and that was also the reason for grabbing a couple of 300s subs to compare directly with the earlier version...

Like I say, might just be my batch and Olly did kindly offer to lend me a set of 1.25" Baaders to check but since I wanted the Astrodon narrowbands I went for a full set and got the broadbands too.

Clear skies, Ian

There seems to be no general rule about halos. I don't have any halos with Baader LRGB, while friend of mine had ones with one of the Astrdon LRGB sets. It may be related to production date - like if older could be more prone to those halos.

...looks like you have a point there Rik.  I do seem to recall a problem with an old version of the Astrodon filters which I think is acknowledged somewhere on their website.

I have Baader LRGB Ha OIII SII and haven't experienced halo issues with them. They all work well for me but I haven't used any other filters so have nothing to compare to. I have no burning desire to change either.

I use a full set of Baader filters & find them to be all that I currently need. I might try a set of 3nm narrow band Astrodon's when I have some cash spare but that won't be for sometime as I've yet to scratch the surface with what I currently have.

Those images show a stunning difference. The Astrodons are so expensive but I guess in this instance you get what you pay for.
