32mm Plossl V 27mm Panoptic

I have been using my 32mm TeleVue Plossl for a couple of years now and have nothing but praise for it. I however can't help but think that a 27mm Panoptic would look just dandy sat next to my 19mm. But would a 27mm, in the real world, would there be any real advantage over my Plossl?

Your thoughts gentlemen please?

The wider apparent field of view would be nice and the Panoptic 27mm would show just a little more sky than the 32mm Plossl does. In terms of optical quality there would be very little difference I feel.

The 27 Pan will certainly show you a little more sky in the VX8L, 1.53 degrees vs 1.33 for the Plossl.

The more significant benefit would be a decrease in exit pupil from 5.3 to 4.5mm which would darken the sky background and help to increase contrast a little.

Worth checking whether there might be any vignetting with the 2" eyepiece in your scope but I doubt it.

Eye relief is 19mm which if anything might be more convenient than the 32mm which can be a little long.

Go for it.

The panoptic 27mm is a gem ;)

Its a nice lightweight 2" eyepiece with a good sized eye lens making it super comfortable to use. Much nicer than an 1.25" plossl IMO

I don't disagree with the recommendation Steve but the TV 32mm plossl does have the larger eye lens of the two - about 12mm larger

The additional FoV of the Panoptic will make it more immersive though, no doubt about that or the benefit of the smaller exit pupil.

Thanks chaps, the Panoptic has it. Now I just need to wait till Saturday and the ballet to see if I have World Cup tickets (England v Fiji) if I am lucky enough to get tickets I'll have to wait till after Christmas, I bought Ashes tickets and for the test against against New Zealand at Headingley last week. Mrs Caldwell is very understanding but there is a limit!

The Gentlemen that have aready answered and a few others speak so highly of the 27mm Panoptic that I feel I need one myself, it is very rare secondhand which means that either people do not sell them or TeleVue do not sell any.

I prefer my 35mm Pan over the 31mm Nagler in many of the my scopes and the 27mm is a nice step from the 35mm, I can see before long I will have one.

I think with the quality of your scope and the 27mm it will be very difficult to make improvements.
