Polar surprise

Just a very short and sweet observation. I have just set up and the Sun is down only 25-30 mins ago, you can easily see to read a paper if you wanted and no one would call it dark.

Turned on the laptop and LX 12 inch and just for fun picked the Pole Star. There was no problem at all with finding it or seeing it but what I was very surprised was I could see the double very easliy and I believe this is 9th magnitude.

I always use Polaris as my first star alignment with my nexus so am used to seeing the double. It's usually very prominent but I can't remember what it's like at twilight. I'll have to remember to have a look now. - :)

It is a lovely one isn't it, as you say a nice little surprise to be able to pick it up before dark but I guess 12" helps!!

I love looking at Polaris and Rigel, just something about their tiny secondaries with enough separation to show clearly.

Stu,

What I could not get over is how light it really was. Now I have the roll off roof boat house as my Cousin called it, the scope is parked after a session so when I switch back on it just picks up from where it left off. At the time I could not see a single star with only my eyes and I still can't get over how clear this was. Have I got the magnitude correct at 9?

Yep, they are Mag 2 and 9.1, separation 18.2"

That's one of the benefits of having the scope aligned all the time. I picked up Jupiter at 2pm after leaving my Vixen setup, turning on and using the existing alignment, worked really well

Stu,

About a month or so back I got Mercury while the Sun was still up but i would n't call it jaw dropping. The best I ever saw that was from Jakarta in a darkish sky with the Hotel telescope from the roof, it gets dark very quickly there, of course you know why.

No chance tonight unless you want to go swimming, 38mm since 0800 and it's still hammering down.
