Help with cabling QSI683WSG & Lodestar X2

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I have a very basic question and I feel a bit ashamed of that.. I have a QSI683WSG and a lodestar X2. I saw that the QSI has a guider port and so does the X2 as well as my mount. But does anyone know how to install the cables? Do i need to connect the mount with the QSI or the lodestar? If connected to the QSI how can the lodestar guide? Or the lodestar with the QSI? But then i cant connect it to the mount. How does that work? Do they speak together thru the USB/Software? I really have no clue how they should be connected.. Someone can help me out here?

Thanks for your support

Some imaging software will allow you to transfer ST4 relay control from the guide camera to the main imaging camera - MaxIm DL can do this but unless you have a good reason not to, the connection is most simply made from the Lodestar itself. I actually prefer to use pulse guiding which obviates the need for any cable between the camera and mount and this is how I use my QSI 683 WSG and (older) Lodestar.

One of the best software guiding packages for sheer simplicity is PHD 2 from Craig Stark- it is simply brilliant!

With the lodestar you select the settings as in the screen shot & plug the cable between the camera & the guide port on your mount. PHD will do all the work for you- your only effort will be to focus the guide camera on a not too bright star.

I think telescopes project your finances into a black hole. I've spent more on the accessories than the OTA. The cameras & filter equipment alone has cost me the best part of £8K & I've still not fully finished with what I think I need. That's the problem you always NEED something else!

Hi, just saw these posts. This is my setup and it works:

QSI632 wsg - cables are connected from the camera to the PC, and the other cable to the mount.

Lodestar - one cable to the PC.

I am using EQMOD to allow communication from mount, QSI to the PC, and use PulseGuilding with MDL.

If you like have a look at my blog 'Right Declination Astrophotography ' you will able to see diagrams showing the layout of the cabling.
