Star party 2015, ideas???

Recommended Posts

Who fancies a star party weekend next year (2015)    This is a chance to make suggestions as to where abouts, what camp site and roughly what time of the year, best to avoid any dates that would clash with the big ones like Kelling and SGL, I am thinking may ( bank holiday weekend)  Lincoln area seems to have good skies especially in the north wolds, any way this is a chance to plan between us and make a good of it

Well the problem with May 2015 is that New moon is around 18th May and there is no astronomical darkness in the Lincoln area at that time.

A month earlier would be better as New moon is on 18th April and there is just over 5 hours of astronomical darkness as well :)

I'll hopefully be off to the Isle of wight twice, ok bit of England light pollution on the horizon, but mag 21.4 at zenith and heated accommodation and cooked breakfast.

Who cares if you clash with a big starparty... If you are where the skies are darker... You don't want everyone crashing your party... You know the sort of queue a BIG DOB generates!

Cheers

Peter

Bit of a hike for me, but looks nice. April sounds ok to me (I don't mind May either, 'cos I'm a cold weather wuss ;))

Im with you on the cold weather wuss, also the problem with sorting a star party, most people want pure dark, no Moon at all, where as you and muyself would be happy to have a bit of Moon to peek at and some planets, maybe a solar system star party   only thing is we can do solar system from most home locations, deep sky is more tricky from homes, also like you say a bit of a hike! up around Grassington and Pen-y-ghent is pretty dark and worth a look

PSP obviously fills my autumn but I would love to have a spring star party to go to. Things that would sell it for me are: timed for a bit of Messier spotting (end of April could bag all of them in a weekend with a good southern horizon), decent dark skies (I love PSP but there is no doubt it is a compromise) and not organising the sodding thing myself :)...

Lleyn peninsula at the end of April would definitely have me and the 250 on a dob base. Would probably also have Suzanne and our two girls so result all round.

James, keep an eye on this thread, it would be great to have you as a guest rather than host, the peninsula is looking good at present, may have to communicate with a couple of camp sites and see if they can give an exclusive booking if the numbers are right

with regards to camp sites ive been going to the peninsula for  years now and there are only 2 site with decent facility's.  the best of them being the one i have posted, the second is in a small village which has 1 light out side the camp site and although its only one light it does intrude. if you are serious about going in april i have a good friendship with  jenny & neville from rmelyncamping.co.uk and they switch the toilet light out for us when we go. its £10 per night with EHU or £8 without.  two massive fields and no street lights. EHU is limited.

Daniel, how about you contact the people you know and see how many people they would want to give us an exclusive weekend booking maybe we could look at the bank holiday weekend leading up to the 4th may, i now need to check stellarium and make sure the Moon that is hated by all but me is not about

Just looking at the campsite we may not be able to get exclusive as its a large looking site, and best to keep a gathering to a fairly small number

Right, Suzanne has just surprised me with a holiday cottage booked for a week on Barmouth estuary, 29 May to 5 June. Not going to be able to dedicate this trip to stargazing, but should be able to meet up for one night if you are close. Sat 30 May is a non-starter though as it is little Emily's second birthday...
