The Moon and Uranus Together - Eclipse:

Recommended Posts

I am rather puzzled by this - my sky-charting software - The SkyX - shows me the upcoming lunar-eclipse just fine, down to minutes/seconds where I am located. But it also shows me that the eclipse will also have Uranus just about smack-center with the Moon at this time. This is what puzzles me!

Why has no one else made mention of this? Either my software is haywire, or someone or ones have been asleep at the switch.

Clear Skies,

Dave

I guess being that before the eclipse its daylight so seeing uranus is nigh on impossible with it's proximity to the sun and during the eclipse uranus is hidden by the moon/sun.

First I've heard though which does sound odd :)

There is mention of it in the monthly guide for October. ;)

'10/8   Full Moon, known as the Blood Moon and this year’s Hunter’s Moon, occurs at 10:51; a total lunar eclipse begins at 10:25 UT and ends at 11:24 UT; Uranus is 1.2 degrees south of the Moon, with an occultation taking place in the Arctic Ocean, northern Greenland, and northeastern Asia, at 11:00; the peak of the Draconid meteor shower (10 to 30 per hour) occurs at 14:00'

As stated/hinted; I suggest that others, like myself, only put things in the calendar or create as a topic that are of particular interest to our locality (the UK in my instance)., as you are now doing. :) I don't have the time to keep up with everything but rely on a mix of calendar guides and SGL to help me.

Thank you for your insight. I, too, finally found a reference in the US publication Sky & Telescope - but not in the body of the magazine. It was what looked to be a post-script addition to a weekly news & announcements article sent out on the web. Which leads me back to my earlier assertion that it looks as though people were "asleep at the switch."

And posting to an international-site, such as SGL, is something I consider a 'balancing-act.' It requires the knowledge of geography to ensure a reader understands dates, times, and locations. It requires clarity to convey the meaning in as universally understandable a manner as possible. And it requires diplomacy, so as not to unintentionally offend anyone if possible. I've been a host and manager and moderator on many fora over the years, and have watched some lovely train-wrecks during this time. SGL is a marvelous place that is wonderfully self-monitoring!

Clear & Dark Skies,

Dave - over the pond & through the woods.

I noticed it while checking Stellarium in preparation for observing the eclipse. I thought Uranus would be occulted, but then when I went to check if it would emerge before the end of totality, I noticed that the moon in my Stellarium is 4x scale, so Uranus will probably just skim the south limb of Luna.

Belay that! My Stellarium Moon is scale times FOUR, so Uranus will be skimming the south limb of the darkened moon. Sounds like a once in a lifetime observation to me. I'll use the 80mm Vixen ED, which is already set up on an alt/az mount for climber pics. I'll move it to a motorized Equitorial mount. If I get any good pics, I'll post em here.
