ISO 6400 does work on M31...

Goodmorning folks!

Images taken yesterday night. Had problems with my powercable getting loose, but finally I got everything together. Decided to try M31, although I know it´s a hard target to process. I took a test shot with ISO 6400 just to frame my target as I wished, and then forgot to change back to planned 1600!!:-) However, I was surprised that I actually got this out from it.

The lower image is full size, just to show noiselevels, and also some nice details. Even though not pinsharp:-)

Integration time: 29 mins. 12x145

Unmodded Canon 7d.

Thank you all for positive feedback!

Pete -yep, calibration frames next time. And with a set of darks and some nice flats it will be easier to process.

Happ-kat - the brownlike feature in the dustlines can be seen in my single subs, but I have stretched them in curves adjustment and also increased their colour saturation. Something I newly discovered is that you can also make a copy of your image, use HDR-transforming tool to get more details and colour, and then put the new image as a new layer onto the original one, alt click on the layer mask icon and then paint with a brush on the areas you want to increase the detail. Ask the other more experienced imagers, I am sure they can come up with some better tips!

Thanks for looking! My next image will not be at the same high ISO though.

Hi Erik,

That is a great result for such short integration time. These modern DSLRs do a good job with regards to the noise with high ISOs due to some clever in camera manipulation of the data before they are written to file and it seems to work to some extent but what you really do loose at high ISO is the Dynamic range which with targets such as M31, M42 and so on is important. A great result none the less and loads of detail too.

Regards,

A.G
