Modded Canon issue

Hi,

I've modded a Canon 1000D which I bought off ebay by replacing the IR filter with a Baader BCF filter.

Camera seems to be working fine, except when using long exposure and high ISO setting, there is an artefact at the left edge of the picture as if some light was shining onto the sensor.

The attached picture was taken with the lens cap on, 2mins exposure, ISO 1600. White balance is fixed at daylight and raw output selected.

I wonder if anyone has seen anything like this or have any guesses as to what might be causing it.

Unfortunately I hadn't taken equivalent long exposure photos before the mod, so I don't know if it's definitely the mod that has introduced this.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance,

Thomas.

Thanks for the useful pointers, looked at some other posts as well, and it turns out it was due to using LiveView mode. Sorry if it's a basic blunder on my part, fairly new to this. Relieved though that nothing's wrong with my camera.

BTW I was using LiveView mode as I was worried that the mirror flip causes vibrations, I'm using the EOS utility to control the camera. I've also tried setting the mirror lock feature, but then I don't seem to able to press the shutter button in the EOS GUI.

What method is recommended for exposure control for AP?

Thanks again,

Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

Definitely this is amp-glow caused by the LiveView. If you want to use the mirror lock then you need a separate serial cable and application that can control it (like APT ;)) But in most cases deep sky images are looking absolutely fine without mirror locking, because the long exposures make the stars big enough to hide the initial shaking :)

Thank you! I've downloaded the demo version of APT, and could connect to the 1000D via the USB cable.

So, is my understanding right: I can use APT with the USB cable (no mirror lockup, but that's OK for long exposures). Alternatively, using a serial cable would give me the option of using mirror lockup. Are there any other advantages to using a serial cable?

Many thanks,

Thomas.

Thank you for the clarification. I'll stay with USB only then for a while. I'm about to get a Sigma 70-300mm APO lens from ebay to try wide-field shots and give me a chance to learn about image processing.

T.
