Hello and... help!

I saw a close-up of Jupiter and 3 of its moons, at 4am this morning, for the first time. <chuffed to bits>

Hello!

I like engineering subjects. I am keen to get into astro-photography. 

I have these 2 "completely" new subjects to me:

Photography ~ Minolta Dimage 7i DSLR with a 49mm thread.

Telescope ~ Sky-watcher bk 1309 with an unknown thread on it (approx. 42mm).

Would anyone know what size the thread on this telescope is, or, if I can get an adapter so I can fit this camera onto this telescope, please?

Hi and welcome to SGL.  Not sure I can help you with your enquiry, and it might be good to also post this in the getting started with equipment section as you are more likely to get a wider audience.

The BK109 looks like a smallish reflector that is on a lightweight mount.  Attaching a DSLR to it might upset the balance somewhat. Have you thought about Afocal photography at first? IE taking a phone, or point and shoot camera and taking some snaps of the moon etc through the eyepiece? Do a search for Afocal for more information.

Hi and welcome. Your telescope will have a t thread if it's 42mm, this is the standard for astrophotography. You would need a DSLR to t thread adapter to go on the camera which then screws on to the t thread of the telescope. This is called prime focus imaging. A quick google did not turn up such a beast for your camera so you might be limited to a focal imaging where you leave the eyepiece on the scope and mount the camera with a bracket to snap whatever is at the eyepiece.

The usual procedure is to use a T-adapter that fits the camera's lens mount, and has 1.25" tube on the other end, then fit them into the eyepiece holder in place of an eyepiece. I am not familiar with this scope or camera, so some research will be required. Commonly the DSLR will have difficulty focusing and the common remedy is to use a Barlow lens in the eyepiece holder, then the t-adapter/camera into the Barlow.--Jack

Thank you all for your warm greetings, information, suggestions & advice. All much appreciated!


I tightened up that mount (tripod) with some well chosen shims and gave it a good fettling (much improved stability).


Afocal, "prime focus imaging" & "barlow lens adapter" (secondary focal imaging?).  Thank you, I'll look into those... (tee hee).


On the main eyepiece of this sky-watcher bk 1309, as best I can measure:

internal female thread @ 32mm (31.8mm) i/d x 1.0mm pitch

external male thread @ 42mm (41.81mm) o/d x 0.75mm pitch


Can't find a thread forms/pitch chart for this T thread spec. to check against my measurements. Have emailed OVL (OEM/Distributor) www.opticalvision.co.uk for clarification.


The Barlow lens that came with my telescope does seem to be a standard 1 1/4" fitting. Neither the camera, nor the telescope, are of great quality or cost, but are of great significance to me. I'll manufacture a camera to barlow lens adapter later on today & try this route first as it's, currently, the easiest for me.

Sorted out  a T mount today...

Machined from: nylon 6-6, 304 stainless steel (31.7mm o/d) & epoxied to a 49mm Hoya filter body...

Fits nice in my 1.25" eyepiece & the Barlow lens. Fits beautifully on the camera too...
