Northern lights

Recommended Posts

Hi folks:

Last night there was a low fog as the northern lights appeared.  I drove out to a dark site to try some imaging at Bigstone Lake which is about a 5 minute drive from my house. I didn't have a tripod so had to set the camera on top of the Toyota Camry make-do 'tripod'. Unfortunately the bottom of photos shows the car roof and missed some nice reflections this way.

I was only there about 20 minutes when heavy fog rolled in.  I used my Pentax K20DSLR. Tried exposures from 22 seconds to 40 seconds @1600 ISO. If time allowed I would have experimented more with reduced ISO settings, etc.  Next time I will take a tripod along for sure but was pleased with results thus far.

Thanks for looking

Cheers

Roger

Hi all:

Thank you everyone for your kind, encouraging comments.  I eventually did find my good Vivitar tripod, so next time I shall be ready.

The lights truly are a beautiful, dancing, colourful display.  In my younger days as we watched them, some friends would whistle at them....supposedly the lights would come down.  I can't recall that actually happening though.

I also would like to comment on a great northern lights display that I watched in awe a few years back.  The were directly above me.  The colours were extraordinary and I could actually see them in perspective. What really caught my attention was that I could actually hear them. The sound was like a light tinkling wind chime or the sound of candling ice in a light breeze in the springtime.  I had never heard that before or since, however when I mentioned this to a few old time northerner friends, they have told me that they have also heard the sounds.

Hoping to get out again soon and experiment a bit with the camera settings

Cheers

Roger
