the Double Double, now i get it!

nice clear skies last night at sunset, but it was nevr going to last! did about an hour of drift alignment in prep for this yeras imaging. with the fog/clouds moving and never having seen the the Double Double, i thought lets have a quick look at the the Double Double, now i get it!

what a wonderfully curious pair of pairs these are, they would bring a smile to anyones face!

I look at it most nights when it's visible, always lovely to see. Tried it last night in the 12" dob, split nicely at anything over x100. Not as nice as the refractor view but still worth looking at

There are further stars to see other than the 4 making up the double-double. Between the pairs are some much fainter stars which were famous in the 19th century as a test for telescopes. Over the years it has come to be assumed that the double-double is itself the test, though those stars are easily split in any small telescope. Thanks for the link. What a splendid book. Writing was certainly an art back then.

I'll keep an eye out for the little trio in the middle. I have a quick squint at the Double Double most sessions but can't remember noticing these.
