Help with viewing using a SW200p Dob

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Can anyone out there with a SW 200p Dob give an indication preferably with a photo of what Saturn would look like with the right size EP . I am aware of the web site that allows EP's and scopes to be matched to give an idea " but i don't seem to be getting the view of Saturn I thought I would get for the size of scope Many thanks in anticipation.

Difficult to say, the scope is f/6 so 1200mm an 8mm eyepiece will give 150x, from using 125x a few years back you should see something that appears about 8-10mm across, planet and rings. Suspect closer to 8mm then 10mm.

Some slight banding, small amount of colouring (brown) and the rings should be reasonably clear.

I was using something like a Tal with an 8mm eyepiece, you may find your view slightly less sharp, that seems to be a slight characteristic of a reflector compared to a refractor but at 150x your scope should deliver a good image - you are not pushing it's capabilities.

For the eyepiece you may need something like a BST or X-Cel, a TV plossl should be good.

Too busy looking and Wowing! if thats such a word to actually measure Jupiter last Year, but if the telescope was bigger ie 10" or 12" then the images would have been bigger as a result. But on one special occaision I had that Wow! moment of  Io's shadow transiting the surface, pin sharp and perfect. I think it was a 12mm Barlowed, or more than likely my 8mm? I did peek Saturn low over/through the tops of some trees.. I was'nt  overly impressed with the image  or the scale,  infact I could only just make out it was actually saturn,  but lots of extra strret lighting out front of  the house prevented a  proper good look, so  my only reason to upgrade to a bigger scope is to increase the scale of the final image, for the slight ammount of light pollution that always exists for my present location.  I wouldn't  have the same  problem from a Darker site  with the 8", and I might  even get a  cheap  Plossl  EP  (the plossl will be thin - not fat like my BST's  to use with my Nikon but I would say saturn was no bigger than my little finger nail, small.

You also mention " right size EP "    I`m not sure there is actually a 'Right Size' Its all down to the image you see, not just that A-is better than B- with a certain EP. Im just about to order a new 6mm EP Just for the Planets! Does that make it the right size?  What I have discovered for my own personal preference is to  use all my EP's and find out what looks best on the night. If it frames the image nicely, and I can see detail, then that is the 'Right Size' for that instance. I honestly use all my BST's every session, no point having them if their  not getting used. I should though, try and  keep a record of the results, but if I can write something down on paper,  then my sites not dark enough!
