Observing Chair

Carbon

Recommended Posts

Here's my new observing chair I welded up using 1" square tubular steel. Seat height is adjustable from 13 to 34 inches.

I built this for my observatory use. I needed a new chair with a small footprint as my Starbound Chair with its wide footprint I've been using has been pretty cumbersome to use within the tight space of my obs.

I used the chair over the weekend and it performed very well with no balance issues at all seat height. I already like it much better than my Starbound Chair. The only thing I found out at the extended seat height is I need a simple foot perch near the bottom. I think I'll weld a single bar across the seat rails near the bottom so as not to interfere with the seat's lowest setting.

Thanks for looking, here's a photo:

Further work on the skinny field chair...  I was not happy with the wooden seat assembly so I made another one using aluminum brackets and a plastic cutting board for the seat.

I mounted both seat assemblies on the seat rail so you can see the difference.

I also added a fixed foot rest to my observatory chair...

On the left is my new, "improved" astro chair.  This one is lighter, folds flat, and has a foot rest.

Both chairs, including my obsy chair, posted elsewhere in this thread, can be turned around and straddled from behind, instead of the normal having to walk around the front of the chair to sit.

Thanks for looking!  :)

I built a mini with the short, left over pieces of extra tubing I had.  This one also folds flat, and the max seat height is 28".   I think this will be my last chair build as my wife thinks I've gone nuts building 4 astro chairs within the past few weeks time.  But she did tell me that this one was the cutest of them all....

Nice, I recently bought a rotating, hydraulic bar stool for 16 quid on eBay... I'm not going to put the wheels on the base to test it on my car park viewing spot.  I figure I'll be able to spin around to get bits and pieces and should be able to lift the lever when sat on allowing the seat to go either higher or lower...

I'll let you know how it performs when the clouds go away!

I used my reverse mount chair last night and it performed wonderfully.  Just walk up to the scope and sit.  No more maneuvering and squeezing your feet and body between your chair and the scope, or having to position your cumbersome chair side ways.  Way better than my old Starbound Chair in this particular situation with my CPC scope
