The past two nights have been very clear, so I've made the most of them both by getting out there and observing.

The first night I had a good session and really enjoyed it. The only bad thing about the session was my neighbours. They were in and out every 10-15 minutes for a smoke (and they talk loud), this was very annoying and distracting.

Last night was a totally different story. Not a peep from my neighbours.

The session was a lot more enjoyable and productive too.

Do any of you have any distractions that hamper your sessions?

I tend to head out to a access road to a reserve.

Field behind has horse's that get curious, and a few other creatures seem to want to have a look at what you are doing. Some make themselves seen, small deer, others remain hidden. Do you know how much noise a hedgehog makes?

Neighbours with loo lights that go on and off all night, yoof in 4x4s with very bright lighting who see a track heading off to nowhere and tear down it.......

On the noise front, amorous hedgehogs make more noise than most other animals around, although a vixen with operatic pretensions comes a close second.

The sound of snails grinding the green leaves can be very distracting !

It means I need to find them and put them in the covered compost dustbin.  Then I have to wash my hands of the snail / slug slime before handling eyepieces etc.

This is a good 'Reasons why I don't observe from home' thread. :)

I get distracted by having to pop into the house to the fridge every time my beer runs out or I get a bit peckish.

+1 for the "reasons why I love observing from home" thread. :)

My neighbour's dog (i think its a border collie), seems to sleep outside most nights and spends a good couple of hours keeping me awake. When i do go outside, any noise i make sets it off and it does not stop barking. If Chara is outside with me.............she starts barking and trying to dig under the fence to get to the other dog.

Then there are the 50 million cats that live on the street. They climb on the roofs of the houses (all bungalows on this street), and jump down anywhere, anytime they feel like it.

Security light next door lighting up my garden. Thankfully doesn't stay on all night but still annoying when you've just managed to find something through the light pollution, then they decide to shine a spot light on me!

one neighbour got a dog about 12-18 mths ago and I swear thekitchen light switch is stuck in the on position. It is literally on 24/7/52. I really feel for the poor pooch as it has never seen darkness. can't be good for an animal.

I do my observing and imaging in rural Spain when I'm over there.  On occasion we've been able to hear drumming... and just recently figured out where it was coming from - one of the houses on the ridge across the valley had a bonfire going, and we could see (using the telescope of course) people round the fire with torches, the bonfire would flare up in time with the drumming getting livelier - some kind of pagan or devil worship thing going on !

So I spent the super moon imaging, whilst listening to the drumming and the dogs howling to each other across the valley, all celebrating the full moon in our own way I guess.

And then there's the occasional wild boar snuffling in the undergrowth.

I find loud talking to be very distracting, even more so than outdoor lights (plenty of those around too). The lights I can make a point of just not looking at, but a loud fast talker is much harder to ignore.

My favorite -- and very effective -- recent distraction was a family of seven racoons that came bumbling along our fence-line a week or so ago. Was having trouble seeing much anyway: their beady little eyes in the darkness just ten or so feet a way didn't help. Those eyes do glow nicely though when you point the red flashlight at them (though they seemed to take a strong interest in the light so I stopped playing that game).

My usuall bug-bear is the set of security lights for the little Mews next to my garden which come on and off

every time anyone passes in or out however............

I also have A tribe of moggies that try to trip me up or climb into my telescope from the wall most nights, and they

(as well as the local Foxes and Badger) turn the lights on more often than anything/one else.

My biggest distraction is therefore provided by the Tenchnologically enabled  local representatives of the Animal Kingdom.

Still watching foxes chasing cats whilst avoiding badgers is as good away to enjoy a cup of coffee as any other.

I just noticed the thread by Bigmakusov entitled " Big Vixen having a run out" and thought " Hey same problems as me then" !

:-). We have a family of foxes in the hedge over the road who get very noisy too!

Our latest arrival, though very quite, is a mole!
