Leica Zoom

Recommended Posts

I have finally took the plunge and opted for the Leica 7.3 - 22mm Zoom eyepiece.

I am hoping the limited FOV, at the low power end, will be offset by my refractor and still give me a decent 2 degree-ish coverage of the night sky.

From what I have read over the last few weeks the zoom is pretty damn useful for solar observing too, so all in all good times ahead.

It is the first time that I am looking forward to going home from a holiday

Thank you guys, I eagerly await the package  and I will post a full report at the first opportunity.

John the zoom is not the ASPH but from what I have read the differences appear very slight, mainly FOV.  I am not overly concerned with the 38 degrees FOV at the low power setting as the refractor naturally gives ample sky coverage.

Another factor is the ASPH  is an extra couple of hundred Euros more expensive  and I am a bit of a tight wad.

Alan thank you,

The skies here are the darkest I have seen in the UK and I can honestly say Newquay is quite a pleasant place to be in, if all the Welsh folk were exiled it would be even better  Sorry Mike

The milky way was excellent last night and there were so many stars that I could not tell which were which  After an hour of being mesmerised by the views through the scope I just laid down on the grass and looked up, occasionally using the binoculars

Awesome night

Nice one Shaun, hope you get some good views with it soon. I tend to agree that the narrow fov at the low end is less of a problem, I tend to use mine from mid to high anyway.

Glad you are enjoying the skies, am having similar fun down in Dorset, though not as good as Wales, still pretty amazing.

I bet it has all changed since I was there, I used to stay with a friend in Henver road which was one of the larger main ones there was a big pub at the start of it but I have forgotten it's name, I also used a bar in in middle called The Sailor rest or something like. It was a nice place, I liked it but have never been back.

I have just re-read, is there a Newquay in Wales? if so I was in Cornwall, so sorry for all the rubbish

It is nice that you got the scope with you, if I did that the wife would have me commited.  Let us all know what the Leica is like when you can.

Alan.

As soon as I get to use the zoom Alan I will do a review

The sailors rest is still here, I went there on Tuesday and came out yesterday, now that's what I call a rest   It would be a nice place to live if you have plenty of lolly but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of work other than tourism.

Great for stargazing though and I guess that is all that matters

Alan - I guess it isn't so strange that 2 seaside ports have a pub called the Sailors Rest

Mike - Rural Wales sure is the place to come for stargazing

Stu - Dorset will be my next choice, I believe the folk down there are even stranger than the Welsh  Chipperdy chips and all.

I couldn't possibly comment Shaun, at least not until I'm safely off 'the island'! ;-)
