Bigger Dob - Different Eyepieces???

Guys

I need to buy another eyepiece! I am also looking to get a bigger Dob for Christmas (if I can resist that long).

The SW 350p is the intended scope.

I currently have:

MaxVison 68° 28, 24, 20, 16mm's (I like these eyepieces)

Delos 12mm (love this eyepiece - looking to get more)

BST 8mm (don't like this one - was going to replace with Delos)

Vixen SLV 6mm (happy with these for high power and lots of nudging)

My question is. Should I do the intended upgrade to 8mm Delos or go longer given the intended upgrade. Any other thoughts gratefully received.

I have the 350p and they are great scopes. the 8mm delos will be great for globs and teasing out detail In fuzzy's. The MV'S are ok in the 350p but are a little soft on the edges cause its f4.6. don't wait till xmas get one now :D

Thanks. That is what I wanted to hear. I was concerned that the additional magnification would make it a "use a couple of times a year as seeing permits" type eyepiece.

For the scope - Can't see myself holding out much past to clocks changing. I need to facilitate an upgraded kitchen to head off local government excitement when the new scope arrives.

This isn't as misogynistic as it sounds. I do most of the cooking but my lovely wife likes the house to be right.

Don't get a Delos ...get a coma correcter and a UHC and OIII filters

Thanks for the thoughts. You've opened a whole can of worms within this one! And a bunch of questions - sorry.

Got the filters! Wouldn't be without them . The 2" versions are a must at some stage (probably sticking with the Lumicon).

Coma - Not considered this. Would you recommend anything a little cheaper than the Paracor??

The Panoptic had been discarded on the grounds of a near 8mm exit pupil and relatively modest FOV. Is this sort of exit pupil size really doable in a bigger Dob? I would get a pretty wased out image if I ied that in my 10". Worth holding out for the 31mm Nagler in the future?

an 8mm BST cannot compare to a 8mm Delos  ;)

Yes. The BST has been a bit of a disappointment. Not necessarily poor value for money. But in these scopes spending a bit / lot more makes sense.

Here's my logic http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/188794-eyepiece-groups/

I have a number of scopes of different focal lengths and aperture and this set covers them all.

Hope it helps.

What a good read. I like the "covering all scope eventualities" approach. My collection will just do the 14" and the grab and go 10" for the moment. I'm sure that a shorti refractor will join the gang at some stage for the wide views. But for now I'm sticking with the Dobs.

Delos 8mm would be a nice addition to your set up for this scope. For low power, maybe a 26mm nagler as a future purchase, though the 31mm may be desirable under the right (dark sky) conditions, also a good account on another thread for the 30mm ES 82 degree ep.  Get to use the scope first off and perhaps put the coma corrector somewhere on your list for later on, not essential but eventually might be nice to have. Difficult to recommend just one, I finally bought a paracorr quite recently, but only after a two or three year use of F4.9 and faster dobs. These things are expensive of course take time over purchases and look on the second hand listings.

do you do many dark sky trips Paul?

Sadly not. My back garden is pretty good. Milky Way clear and bright. Between 5.5 and 6 for Naked eye viewing (I forget the correct term).

When time and budget allow I intend to go properly large and portable for those dark sky expeditions that I keep reading about. :)

I'm more inclined to Iain's idea of no paracorr to begin with. If you're not bothered by coma in 10"f4.7 dob, there's a fair chance that you wouldn't be bothered in 14"f4.5 either, coma increases only about 9%.

The day you get an 82deg 26T or 31T, you may feel the need of a paracorr.

An 8mm eyepiece in a 14" Dob will get a great deal of use. I wouldn't hesitate to get one :)

With aperture you will find yourself using a great deal more power on deep sky objects. Go for it I say.

This is very true. The 350P has around the same focal length as my 12" F/5.3 and I'm often using a 6mm eyepiece for 265x on planetary nebulae and globular clusters. You can really burrow into the cores of the latter and fill the view with tightly packed stars.

i wasnt bothered by coma in 10" F4.8 dob where it did bother me a lot on 350P what is F4.6.Possibly its due to that i used 100 deg eye pieces,as such,my recommendation would be get a coma corrector. Televue Paracorr type1 will set you back for around 150-160quid but that will be your best investment.Afterwards you can do a few sessions and determine what eye pieces from your current collection work and what doesnt.Deffo BST has to go,that will not work,Delos and Vixen will be fine.

So true, I try for used items first, yet when it came to the paracorr they are rare second hand and get pounced on straight away or generate a frenzied bidding war on ebay. Purchased mine from a USA retailer which worked out OK.
