I think it's neptune

Recommended Posts

It should be Neptune. The Helix has VERY low surface brightness. It isn't anything like the Ring Nebula, despite what images may have lead you to believe. I have seen the Helix and it is best described as a large, ghostly ring in my C8. In Olly's 20" it was easily visible on a dark night, but with a 70mm scope you would be hard-pressed to see it at all, let alone catch it on an iPhone

I'm not convinced about it being neptune in a 20mm EP. Should be a lot smaller, even with hefty zoom.

Not saying it's not, but I've seen a lot of people getting worse results in high FL scopes with dedicated planetary cameras.

However, with less than spot on focus, you can get a smiliar effect.

There is little out there with that colour. Neptune is bright enough for that scope, and do not be fooled by the size: it is probably not in focus. It could be something else of course. Next time, perhaps try to make a drawing of the object in the star field (or draw it in a map). If you look at it again after a week or so, it should have moved. Alternatively, look at the position of Neptune in Stellarium (free software under Windows, Linux and Mac OS-X), and compare the view in your scope with stellarium. Stellarium has a tool which allows you to enter scope and EP and it will simulate the views. Very useful
