Try this:
Rotate the dial to S or Shutter Priority, then set the value to 30.

Then go back to Manual mode.

On my Sony you set the Shutter/Exposure value and this is used by the Manual mode.

Bleedin weird I agree.

I am guessing yours operates the same.

If not then I haven't any other ideas.

Hi thanks guys but none of that seams to work? Because i have a barlow and T ring attached it is saying 'Lens Not Attached' wonder if that has anything to do with why i cant change anything?

@Lammy on the D5100 one cannot select exposures over 30 secs using the camera controls. You can use the IR rempte and bulb mode and time it yourself. I'm using the Shoestring astronomy http://www.store.shoestringastronomy.com/products_ds.htm shutter control box and cable with Backyardnikon. http://forum.otelescope.com/post/backyardnikon-v1-beta-02b-is-ready-for-download-6974182  it's beta 2b right now (works fine for me) and has a free 60 day license. With this combo exposures can be set to just about anything in one second increments. BYN has the same feature set as BYE for Canon.-Jack

Thanks for the useful posts! finaly figured it out! I put on the Nikon 18-55mm lens and  followed the instructions as given by knobby's link then turned the camera off swapped over to my T and Barlow and it only blumming worked! I must of taken off the Nikon lens and swapped my gear over while the camera was powerd on hence why it was saying Lens Not Attached lol Doh! Ah well you live and learn i suppose sorry for wasting everyones time but thanks again for the fast response.

LAMMY......Hi, I have the D5000. Not to dissimilar! With camera switched off I can remove the lens. Now switching the camera back on, Live View, it  reports that the lens is not fitted, however, by setting the camera to 'M' on the top dial near the shutter button, I can rotate the rear horizontal thumb-wheel and can easily change the shutter speeds all the way from BULB to 1/4000 and all speeds in-between. pressing the aperture button, next to the shutter release and rotating the thumb-wheel has no effect, due to there being no aperture (lens not fitted) but with lens back on, that aperture switch functions ok. Don't ever remove or fit your lens with power on?

sounds weird. I always thought canon and nikon are so identical they might be twins. In canon i just switch the "lens" to a t-ring and stuff just works. I need to get a t-ring with a focus-confirm chip though.
