17 Lyrae - another challenging split!

Recommended Posts

Worth taking  look at this pair (sometimes twinned with 23 Aquilae in terms of difficulty) as it is quite pretty. Said to be a bit easier than 23 Aquilae despite the mag difference because of the high altitude at the moment.

The components are listed at mags 5.3 and 9.1, sep about 3.7 arcsec, with a PA close to 290 degrees  (from Sissy H).

Although visible with my ED80 at x150, the separation was poor - much better with the Mak at x200 and x250, where the secondary is a bright point just outside the bright diffraction ring of the primary, nearly due W of the primary (there is another star in the same field with a much greater separation, although this is said not to be part of the system).

Colours? The primary looks slightly yellow to me at low mag compared with other field stars around, the secondary perhaps whiter.

Lovely colours at between a starting x160 then up to x240.

If you want some other Aquila challenges then ,

The 11.3 mag BC of 5 Aquilae, a multiple group. Just low wide field at x50.

(28 Aquilae will give you another double double.)

Lovely tester at Pi Aquilae, a bright pair at 1.4" separation caught at x240.

Really well placed just now under

Clear skies,

Nick.

Pi Aquilae is one of my favourites at the moment. I was pretty pleased to get a decent split with my little Vixen ED102 at 221x

Thanks for the other targets too

I was looking at Pi Aquilae again tonight at x400 (!) with my Mak. Stunning separation, dark space about one and a bit times the Airy disk. The seeing was so good I wandered to Lambda and Delta Cyg at the same mag. We don't get many nights this good.....

Chris,

How odd, I think this is the second time you have writen something up and the very same night I was looking at the same stars. I split this double last night with the 115mm APO and a 8.8mm Meade UWA and a 5mm Pentax XW, clear in both but as you said overhead for me.

17 Lyrae ... First split using new 9mmx 100 degree widefield zhumnell giving 135x . Very very faint companion bluish in color ..Very nice pair but i need more magnafication to really see this pair. I will try the 9mm with 2 x barlow.( not impressed by this combo) Next i tryed my 6mm ortho, but the 9mm zhumnell gave a better image so far.
I have tryed a 3.7mm epic and a 7.5mm epic and i used my ball lens seibert optics 7.5mm and thats the only eyepiece that gave a good a veiw as that 9mm zhumnell believe it or not. tuff double!!!!
