Hello, from Las Vegas, Nevada

My first post to introduce myself...

I'm a retired engineer who has been tinkering with scopes for well over thirty years, but learn something new every day. :)

I live in Las Vegas, Nv, less than two miles south of the famous "strip".  Needless to say, the northern part of my backyard sky is really light polluted.  However, I'm about thirty minutes (and one mountain) away from a very dark site in the Mojave Desert that I visit at least one night a week.

I'm mostly (95%) a visual guy, only slightly dabbling in astrophotography.  I primarily use four scopes: AD10 Dob; 120mm refractor that stays outside aligned/covered 24/7/365; a 6" Newt; and a small eq 90mm grab-n-go refractor.  My wife shares my interest and has an ES AR102 that she calls "Lucy".

I'm lucky to have a nice club in the area and am pretty active in the Las Vegas Astronomical Society. http://www.lvastronomy.com/

I'm pretty active on another forum as well, and hope to be an asset to SGL as well.

Thanks for having me.

Clear Skies,

John

Hi John, and a warm welcome to SGL. Sounds like you have got a good array of scopes and kit there, and good to hear your wife shares your interest.

Looking forward to seeing you around and contributing to the Lounge.

Happy Stargazing.

Welcome, John.

Nice intro: and you come across as a guy who just knows how to have fun with this hobby.

But a scope that stays outside 24/7/365!!? Ochone! That's just too, too way out for me to handle. A bit like a cow with a gun ...

Looking forward to having you around.

I know it sounds crazy, but here in the desert we get six inches of rain all year.   It is covered with a Telegizmo 365 totally waterproof cover.  The only thing that sticks out below the cover are the 2" stainless steel legs... about 2 1/2 feet.  From a security perspective, it's about as safe as can be.  My backyard is totally private, surrounded by block walls and locked gates.  The scope can't be seen from anywhere... even the neighbors.

Clear Skies

Hey John, nice to see you over here at last. You'll find the folk to be a really friendly bunch.

And I know from first hand experience that you have excellent advice to offer.

All the best,

Rich

Hi and welcome John- I learn something every day - mostly how much I have to learn!- still I think this is good -as an engineer you must be well equipped for this hobby - although I was once told by an eminent astronomer that musicians and medics gravitate here - certainly true for me!- best wishes and look forward to your posts - Tony
