Arresting sights , not the usual suspects !

Waited until the cloud went to leave a lovely quiet dark sky. A planned list will help keep away from the familiar. To Cygnus,

NGC 6910 the lovely "rocking horse " or "y cluster". Try it at x150 where it fills up the view with sparkle.

NGC 6826 the " blinking" planetary nebula. Certainly blinks well at x50, a lovely blue.

NGC 7008 showed a patch of nebulosity next to a star , a fuzzy 'foetus' nebula.

NGC 7027 , surprisingly bright at +9. Really stands out of the field.

Over to Delphinus and

NGC 6905, the "blue flash" planetary nebula. This is so lovely that I spent a lot of time getting the best view. It's a band of nebulosity between close stars. A line of stars points to it. It really looks different from the usual small bright ones,post-6974-0-19383800-1406698522_thumb.jp

This is at x136 , with a Meade 4000 , 8.8mm chunk of old school glass. Really a superb target,

NGC 6934 a bright globular cluster at the end of a line of stars. Then onto the very remote globular

NGC 7006, larger, but appears fainter, very pleased to get this at x150. Putting up the mag does darken the sky to the point that your find blends away. A zoom ep is ideal to judge the right ep.

NGC 7025 is a unobtainable galaxy, but right next to the "toadstool" asterism. It looked like something.

Sagitta.

NGC 6879 a planetary nebula much fainter than the stars, but it flashes well. As does

NGC 6886.

IC 4997 was found at x150 near double stars, another minor planetary.

Camelopardalis. Between the head of UMa and Cassiopeia.

IC 3568 the "lime" planetary nebula , bright at x150. Check out the colour. This is a red giant with a yellow halo. Then down to the end of "Kemble's Cascade" and the " blue oyster " the gem of NGC 1501. Although rated low magnitude , it's a lovely blue . Right next to the "skull and bones" of NGC 1502.

Andromeda.

NGC 7662, the "blue snowball", a stunning colour in front of a x50 bow of stars. Probably the most special of colours.

NGC 404, just a peek at the fuzz almost hidden as "the ghost of Almach".

Cassiopeia.

NGC 281, a right nebulous ''Pacman " cluster, not from town though. I was very pleased to find the triple Burnham 1, delicately right angled at x100 .

NGC 147 is a (9.5) bright galaxy, just a smudge in this summer sky. Then ending (phew!) with the bright streak of

NGC 7331 at the top end of Pegasus at x100.

Thick white cloud blew in as I got set up to view,

Aquila , NGC 6741( the "phantom streak"), NGC 6760 a bright globular and the lovely NGC 6781, the "ghost of the Moon", best at x120-220.

If you have time for just one, then top of the list is NGC 6905. I'll be back, under

Clear skies !

Nick.

Thats a varied and interesting "haul" Nick

I made a late decision to put my 12" dob out last night and had a great few hours under pretty dark skies until the glow of dawn in the eastern sky sent me scurrying to bed like one of Tolkiens Trolls !
