The Milky Way was fantastic tonight, horizon to horizon with a pile of structure showing, over in the split it looked bright, almost nebula like, patches, lanes, splits all showing well.A dark rift in the MW cut through the bottom of Cygnus, but Cygnus itself was almost completely lost in the stars.Yes the conditions were good, transparency 4/5 with an SQM of 21.5

The North American nebula showed itself with no filter, and with my OIII it stood out in stark contrast to its surroundings.I noticed something unusual around the "gulf" area pocket-there are very few stars there, same as along the edge of it.I noticed this with the OIII but thought it must be the filter, when tried with the 21mm,17mm unfiltered it confirmed the obs.Very black in that pocket too,and along some of the edge down the nebula.I wonder why?

The Crescent neb not only showed its "shell" with a kind of center spike, but it showed some fine nebulosity within it....almost looked like faint, very fine threads popping in and out of view. This was an excellent sight. The 23mm Luminos showed it well in addition to the 21E.

Much more observed, the Veil was amazing and I have to say I saw some new (to me) nebulosity above the split in the broom,a few patches floating round, direction vision and the Wisp was very extensive for a 10" scope, with more showing tonight. The Ring took an unbelievable 240x-250x with the LZ,fantastic with no filter.....and many more sights...

After the VX dewed up badly,I just stared at the sky in amazement, the MW tonight was very bright and so structured

Great evening

The Cresent nebula always looks like a big peanut to me at low power but increasing the magnification slightly makes that centre spike obvious and it kinda takes on the form of a Euro € sign I've found.

Sounds like a great night Gerry, dark transparent skies what more could we ask for? :)

It looks to me like a ghostly brain. I heard it described as a jellyfish too that kinda fits.

Great object that's shows incredible detail if your skies are nice n dark.

Happy hunting :)

Steve, ghostly brain is a great description.I was lucky that the conditions allowed any detail in the 10".I am going to try IC 1318 by Sadr with the Hb next, not sure if its possible.

Looking forward to late summer and dark sky for observing each of those objects, much to visually digest whether through scope, binoculars, eyes.

I set up a bit early and checked the SQM,about 18.5,within a short while the sky started to darken rapidly.I was fortunate to be able to watch the Milky Way appear as the sky darkened, this was quite a sight,I should have brought a lawn chair.

Your DSO sky will happen soon Iain, you bought an Hb if I remember,IC 1318 will be a big challenge, maybe you'll give it a try too....I'm interested to hear how the VX14 does on it.

Typically the sky is perfect here for tonight Gerry. My local club are meeting up for a late start session, however it being the school hols I am planning on being away early on Sat with my daughter cycle touring for a few days. I have invested in a SQM and look forward to trying at different dark sky locations. Also look forward to using the H-beta filter and will try this on the Cocoon nebula and will also attempt this for IC 1318.

Have a great trip Iain!I will try the Cocoon too, never thought about that one...so much to find.I made the mistake of buying a 1.25" filter, which prevents its use with widefields.I wanted to see if it worked on anything besides HH-which it does,oh well its only money. If I even get a hint of IC 1318 a 2" is coming.I think the Hb likes a bit bigger exit pupil than the OIII.
