Just like to say hello to all you fellow stargazers on SGL.

I've always been interested in the skies but this will be the first time I've done anything about it except read.

There are very few specialists outlets in Thailand (I've found 2) and they're both in Bangkok, about 800 km from where I am. But after months of much reading, surfing and taking in all the advice and suggestions here on SGL I've finally taken the plunge.

My new scope and mount should be with me sometime in August. There hasn't been a great rush to get it as currently we're in the middle of the rainy season up here (should end in September) and clouds are omni-present at the moment. But when they finally drift away I'll blessed with wonderful dark skies for months on end (hopefully).

Whilst I'm the current owner of a basic Nikon D3100 DSLR with a variety of lenses, I'm more interested in the visual side of astronomy at the moment but no doubt I'll probably get the bug later on.

I've downloaded Solarium on both my laptop and tablet and I'm busy scrolling through the night sky and learning as much as I can.

So, roll on August/September when the hardware arrives and the real learning begins.

Cheers

First of all, thanks to all of you for your kindly welcome to SGL. I'm a raw, but enthusiastic beginner, setting off on a world of discovery (got to be a bit poetic sometimes!)

I did mention in my first post that I was expecting my new scope to arrive sometime in August. Well, low and behold, on Friday August 1st I had an email from the dealer in Bangkok to say that it was on its way and sure enough, on Saturday afternoon, 2 quite large boxes were delivered. When I find out how to upload images to the site I will.

Basically I've got a Bresser Messier AR-152L on an EXOS-2 mount with a 1.25" bog-standard diagonal, 26mm and 10mm  1.25" plossl eye pieces and a 2x Shorty Barlow.

It's a bit bigger than I imagined  !!  But eh, I don't really mind

Managed to get it all setup without having any bits left over, set the mount with my correct latitude, a rough polar align (it's got a polar align scope built in (illuminated reticule) but I'm only doing visual), properly balanced using the 2.5kg counter weights supplied and align the finder scope to the main scope. So I think I'm ready to go.

But, it's the rainy season here in Thailand and so I might have to wait till September at the earliest for clear skies. Ah well, as they say over here, "mai pen lai".

Cheers,

Brian

Brian, a brief Hi from your Isaan neighbor. Congrats on the new rig, I know you'll enjoy it. Over here, there have been brief clearing spells just after sunset a few days a month. I'm getting my own kit together. Getting an EQ mount for my camera this month. Had about 40 minutes of the moon in the clear, night before last, and got 20 1s subs with the 400mm FF lens. All the best-Jack

P.S save a picture in JPG or PNG format to post here. Love to see your scope/mountpost-37593-0-35695000-1407054152_thumb.p
