The centre of the sun - first 4 days in Menorca WL/Ha

Hi,

My attempts at imaging the sun in WL and Ha from the very sunny Menorca.  It was cloudy on Sunday, until after 5pm and there was a bit too m uch cloud, so only white light, taken across the sea (you get a fantastic sunset here)

All images WO 80mm & ASI120MM.  WL - lunt wedge, 0.8x or 3x barlow.  Ha Quark, 0.5x or prime focus.

Close up of the only sunspot group, 3x barlow

Monday 21st, Sunny in the morning, but quite a strong wind to contend with.  White light first

AS_p15_Multi_Drizzle15_Sun-21-7-14-1-wl-

Not a good day in Ha, my diagonal bounced off the tiled floor and dismanteled itself in to it's component parts, fortunately, it didn't break, but time wasted putting it back together and the sun was nearly at the maximum altitude my mount wil cope with.  Note to self, must get up earlier.

Only one Ha and a little disappointing of the main (only) AR.

Tuesday, slightly better conditions, sunny again from the start (a bit earlier) and wind a little less, white light first

Still just one main AR, but something new coming over the south western rim.

Ha, a little better today, still not shaping up as well as I would like, but I am going to put that down to the lack of any decent ARs rather than skill and gear.

Ha taken at prime focus

Wed 23rd, the one you have been waiting for.  The new AR is here and my Quark seems to be behaving itself.  Together with good clarity and an almost total lack of wind.  WL first

A 3x close up of the new AR.  Did I mention I like this WO ZS80 for white light?  It gives really good results with my 3x Televue barlow.

Now the Ha, first of the same AR

And in false colour

And two prom shots.

A fine detached prom.

Thanks for looking, sorry for the bumper edition, but lack of broadband and using 3G to upload, plus Mrs DrRobin's nagging about going out to eat has meant a little delay in posting.

Great images Robin. I'm holidaying in Menorcaright now. Did you see the lighting display Sunday night.

See it, we were right underneath it. We are staying just north of Cala n Bosch and it finally hit us at about 12:15am, the worst was over over by 12:45, but it continued on for another 30 minutes. Actually for the 90 minutes before, we could see it coming across the sea and land from Citudella, stiking the sea, all the time the stars were visible above us.

Have a great holiday on Menorca, it's our first visit but we love it already. Pity I has been so windy, not good to keep my solar scope stable.

Nice pics.  Is the diagonal ok after you dropped it?  There but for the grace of god ...

It has survived Mark, although I now think it is not a very good one and want a newer 2" when I get back. Perhaps I can claim on the travel insurance?

Fab collection, Robin

I love the Tele Vue 2x and 3x Barlow. I keep hearing Powermate all the time but all in all I think I prefer the Barlows for solar imaging (H-a and wl) for some reason. 2x normally works and if conditions are up to it, the 3x seems on the money.

More importantly, I hope you are keeping up the fluid intake, hic!

Thanks guys.

What a fine collection of images :) :) :)

 I wondered why we were getting a heat wave here

I will go away with my solar kit more often if you like?  Especially as I have just started the 'send Robin off with his solar kit fund'.

Lovely images Robin.

Hope you are enjoying your trip. :)

Love it here Jarrod. The villa we are renting is up for sale, now that is a very tempting idea.

Luke, I had a 5x Powermate when I had a shorter focal length night time scope, but sold it and then picked up a 2x and a 3x TV Barlow when they came up second hand. Both are very good. The advantage of the Powermate is that keep the same (nearly the same) magnification regardless of the distance of the camera/eyepiece from the Barlow lens, so AR much more consistent.

Mrs DrRobin makes sure my fluid intake is up to date, we have a little beer/wine hour at 5pm daily, just to rehydrate before going out of something to eat.

Hmm just looked how much this villa is up for sale, 476,000 Euro! Probably not a serious consideration then.
