Hello Everyone,

My name is Steve.  I've recently got involved with amateur astronomy as a hobby after finishing off an accounting designation.  I am really enjoying my time under the stars.  I am looking forward to learning from everyone here!

Currently the astronomical tasks I am working on:

1) Finding a reasonably close dark sky site.  Where I'm from, I would need to drive at least 1.5 hours on dark, 2 lane, deer infested highways to get to a site with reasonably dark skies.  I am  thinking about doing this as part of camping trips in order to be able to avoid driving in the dark.

2) Getting involved with the Royal Astronomical Society here in Winnipeg to learn more and pick up some skills

I've been using Celestron 15 x 70 skymaster binos (which I love) and a Celestron AstroMaster 114mm telescope that I rigged with a reflex sight.

I've been lurking and reading articles on this forum and find it very enlightening.  Looking forward to participating! :smiley:

Nice place Winnipeg, but I cannot see why it is 1.5 hours to somewhere dark. Would have thought that outside of 100/101 the light drops off very fast. West between 1 and 2 is Spruce Woods Prov Park and that is stumbling round in the dark territory, and out on 12 about 30Km is another area.

Anyway RASC will have places that they visit, actually just read that they meet at Spruce Woods, and I also see that you have introduced yourself to them and asked about the next Spruce Wood meeting.
