Canon 300mm F4 L for imaging

I am no expert but I have pointed my larger L lens to the sky and it worked very well indeed. The 300 F 4 is a really good lens, I had one once some years back but got a faster one and empty wallet.

The image I shot was a 6 minute exposure of somewhere near Deneb ( see what I mean about no expert ), there was a bit of noise but the stars were fairly sharp considering I didn't make a massive effort aligning the mount. I see no reason why you could not do similar.

Good luck,

Alan

You might get some minor blue fringes on bright stars with these ED lenses but you should be able to remove these in software.

A little off topic but some canons have CA correction data within the camera i have used it with my Kit lens and it worked a treat.

The 300 F4L is a great lens here's a link to one of my images taken with it http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/175650-andromeda-galaxy-astrotrac/

this is the non IS version which has 6 less elements than the later lens but is reported as being sharper. A non SGL friend of mine has the same lens (but with auto focus duff) which he is selling soon, PM me and I can put you in touch.

Hi Fay

The AF doesn't work and the manual focus is a bit stiff which is fine for Astro but not for normal photography but it does mean it's relatively cheap. He'll be putting up on Astrobuysell soon.
